Re: [Amc-list] Superchargers for AMC

The "Gator" was (is?) a turbo converted to belt drive. The limiting
factors are pulley size (tiny one on the turbo shaft) and turbo
bearings. Turbo bearings are usually plain bronze designed to run with
NO side load. The case has to be machined for different bearings. Last I
head there was also a move to extend the shaft for another bearing on
the front of the housing for added support. That would make it hard to
change belts, but well worth it for bearing life. If a bearing goes out,
the turbo housing will closely follow. With belt drive the turbine won't
"get caught" somewhere and stop rotating if a bearing goes, and the belt
pressure will pull it into the side of the housing. I'm not sure the
pulley combo will work well because of sizes.

This is basically what's done to make a Paxton/Vortec type supercharger.
The compressor is similar to a turbo, but with different bearings. A
gear drive increases rpm from the belt to turbine. The Gator might work
for low boost, but a remote turbo would be about the same with less
complicated work.

Was not Dick Datson (sp?) working on something, a "gator" super or
turbo charger thing..
