Trannie troubles suck. I told them that they might consider getting a remote starter switch and some wires, eyelets and juryrigging it like i did my 74 Hornet Sportabout years ago. You could turn on the key and nothing happened, part of the horrible seat belt interlock system, and not fun to open hood and do screwdriver to solenoid truck each time, so simply got remote starter button, wires, and wired from solenoid thru firewall, and inside to the package tray where I had the remote button. Then simply turn key, hit button and worked every time. Not sure this would help them, but when they mentioned screwdriver on starter, reminded me of what I called 'the poor man's anti theft switch!'
