My sediments exactly. I've thought a long time about doing something
like this, either with a 58-60 (love the retro look) or 64-65 (like the
quasi-turbine look and the extra room) American 2-door. I'd been looking
for a source for a medium size four or small six diesel. I had forgotten
about the Nissan, I'll have to add that to my list. I would love to have
a veggie Rambler for a fair weather driver...

Oh, wow, What a cool concept car to run on Waste vegetable oil!
Man I wish it was close enough to check out in person!
My brother is a store manager at Wendys too, I could get all the Veggie oil I need!

Regretfully, the globs in the fuel tank are from the new 10% ethanol content in your gasoline (in place of the former MBTE) dissolving the fiberglass gel coat on your tank. There is no other way around getting this resolved than to replace the tank with something other than fiberglass.

This is a huge problem with older boats who now must use gasoline with ethanol particularly where the tank is contained inside the hull of the boat and dissolves to the point of causing leakage and an explosion within the boat. It also deteriorates older rubber hoses like the ones that connect your tank to the fuel line and the fuel line to the fuel pump and carb.

For older cars and boats, it is recommended that you replace all 1990 and older rubber fuel line connectors and seals with newer rubber hoses who's compounds are resistant to the effects of ethanol in gasoline.

Other interesting secondary side effects of the ethanol are that the ethanol can eventually get overloaded with moisture if left sitting in a vented tank system for long periods of time and resulting in it completely separating from the gasoline causing a 3 point drop in the gasoline's octane and creating a water and ethanol mix at the bottom of the tank with the gasoline floating on top. With a normal fuel pick up at the bottom of the tank, the separated water ethanol mix will be sucked up first and the engine may not run at all if there is enough water in the mix. In addition, the new gasoline is an excellent solvent and will dissolve most varnish build ups and result in clogged fuel filters and additional undesirable particulates to the gas mix that create much faster valve and cylinder wall wear and tear until the varnish has been run out of the system.

On a car with a 20 gallon tank, most of the secondary side effects are minimal due to running out of gas before the fuel separation will occur unless the car has been left sitting for long time. For those of you who put your car away for the winter, it is recommended that you use new fuel stabilizers that are designed to eliminate the water ethanol mix and subsequent separation effect for up to a year.

As far fiberglass tanks go, they will soon be history whether desired or not. There is no way around the gel coat dissolving process so the only thing that can be done is to replace a fiberglass tank with one made from a poly based plastic compound.

Bottom line on this new gasoline mix is that you can no longer use

There is a large article on this very issue in Power and Motor Yacht magazine in the January 2007 issue. Ting

A: A buddy of mine had similar happen last year. Turned out something the
gas company added to the fuel congealed in the tanks and ended up clogging
the gas stations up too. (HUGE ruckus about that here. Probably $1 million
in claims)

I barely made it home yesterday! What a fiasco. Same old
patient, my
'82 AMC Jeep CJ-8 Scrambler, 258 I-6 with Carter BBD carb.
Last night I was on my way to meet some friends, and the Jeep
started bucking, bogging and spitting like I was running out of
gas. I
pulled into a local station and filled up, and it took 13
gallons so it
did need some, but of a 20 gallon tank, I should have had at
least 70
more miles on it!
Pulling out, it did the same thing, so I figured I'd better
hi-tail
it home before it left me stranded. I did make it, but it would
alternately run well, run well but stall at stoplights, or act
like it
was running out of gas. It stalled pulling into the driveway.
I pulled the carb and found these weird globules of stuff in
the
float bowl. Slightly amber-tinted, they moved like Jello that
hasn't
quite set up, or like semi-solid drops of oil in water. I poured
the
gas from the bowl out into a glass container, then poured it
thru an
old t-shirt. I took pictures of each of those steps, I'll have
to post
them to a photo site when I get home. I wiped out the float
bowl, but I
wish I'd taken a pic of it before I did. It looked as if someone
had
put tapioca pearls in my gas!
I disassembled and cleaned the carb from top to bottom,
spraying out
all ports with carb cleaner, then compressed air. I put it all
back
together, reinstalled the carb, and the Jeep ran like a top. Ran
well
all the way to work this morning, too.
The feed line is new from tank to fuel pump, but the return
line is
original, and due to be replaced. (as a side note- has anyone
heard of
brake line having some sort of lining to it? I'm using 10' of
hand-bend
brake line as fuel line from the tank to the pump, and I wonder
if it's
coming from that.) I now have THREE filters inline, but I didn't
see
anything like this stuff in either of the two I had before (one
before
the pump, one after).
Has anyone else had such an experience with gelatinous goo
from
outer space in their carb?

I've recieved several "ebay notices" from supposed buyers that
had not received their items and are furious. They threaten and
generally swear and curse me for not deliverying the goods. I
haven't been selliing on ebay in a while so I ignored the first
two. The third one came today and pointed towards me not sending
out item # 280024514997 so I closed the email and deleted it,
then went on Ebay and checked the item number. It comes up in
German with no english on the add at all! Uh, I don't speak or
write German, I doubt I put that add up. Anyway I just wanted to
do a headsup kind of thing in case someone on one of these lists
actually sells. Don't reply or click a link on any of these
bogus notices! They are just fishing for email addresses, user
names and passwords!

I've wanted to put LEDs in my panels but it hasn't been high on the list...

The issue with LEDs are that they are not omni-directional. My 67s have
alot of illumination done through the edge of clear plexiglass (light
pipes). LEDs just shoot straight up. Not sure of the answer.

As for the heat of 168s. Dunno. The heat will be directly proportional to
the current draw so, if 168s pull a significant more amount of current, the
heat will be significantly more.

Try this... Take a 158, impede airflow around it (a towel, in a small box
or etcetera), put 12V across it and measure the temperature. Do the same
with a 168 and see how much hotter it is.

Never heard of water moving or oozing like this stuff does... I took a
few pics of it last night, and posted them to
http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v102/n9viw/Jeeps/ .
My thought is, if it's water, why doesn't it respond to 'gas dry' stuff
like HEET, or brake cleaner, which is pressurized alcohol? It remains a
semi-solid no matter what I sprayed on it last night- carb cleaner,
brake cleaner, and obviously it was like that in the gas. Truly
bizarre.

Nick

I tried that item number and came up with English and a Minnesota location.
Item # 280024514997, a 5.99 comic book.

I have received a few of these since joining the list. I know my address was
harvested at some point, but my Ebay user name was never reflected in the
phishing message. THAT will only show up in real Ebay messages. If in doubt,
real messages will show up in MyEbay under your user name, check there. I
always reported the fake messages to Ebay or Paypal, whichever was spoofed
or involved.

Lately, with all the stock market-type spam, I have just been deleting,

Nick,
IIRC from my bush pilot days, you can strain the gas through a good quality chamois and it will separate the water from the gas. The gas will go through the chamois but the water will not.
Bob,
During the restoration of my AMX, I pondered the same question about exhaust headers. I have had headers on the car for its whole life and I'm tired of the noise from leaks so I opted for the newer factory high flow manifolds. My memory tells me that tests done "back in the day" showed these manifolds flowing almost the same as headers.
Joe,
Some neat pictures, my first question is where exactly is this unnamed scrap yard. There are some really neat old cars in it.

Why make work for yourself? If it's plastic and can't rust
there's no need unless you have reason to believe something
extraordinary happened.

I hadn't thought of that! (diesel Rambler). A friend has a veggie
oil Mercedes from Lovecraft here in LA. It always smells like
french fries (really). Glugging Costco vegetable oil into the
car with a big funnel is a lot less convenient than LPG! Still
cheap, but if a few thousand people compete for burger joint
used grease, fights will break out. It could get ugly.

I've been getting those for some time. The few I checked
weren't even valid eBay items.

I'm sure YOU know, but the way to check this stuff is the
same for any of the bank scams etc -- manually type in the URL
for eBay, yuour bank, etc, log in, if it's real (unpaid item,
free money, etc) it'll be listed there. NEVER! click any links
in email!

If they are the LED lamp replacement, with a clear plastic
lightbulb shape, you can sand them with 180 grit or so to
really rough them up. They diffuse OK then, but they still
don't produce hemispherical light.

That's an excellent idea...

(Once I tried to make a heater for a cage of pet rats by wrapping a 40
watt incandescent lamp in aluminum foil. They lasted about one hour --
glass got hot enough to melt and it sucked in a bubble and blew out!)

Hey Tom!
If this is ethanol causing the problem, what is that stuff we been
running in our gasoline here for the last 30 years? Seems to me I been
running alcohol laced gasoline now ever since lead disappeared!
