Attention southern California listers.

The old car buyback auction (Anaheim site) in the Los
Angeles area will have a 72 Matador 4-door this next
Saturday.

According to the VIN number listed, it has a 360-2bbl
with automatic trans on the column.

Somewhat off topic. I need to get soem wheels for my wifes 97 XJ Cherokee. It came with some chrome that are a chore to keep respectable. So I've been looking and showing her choices. Right now the choice seems to be the Canyon 15X8 wheels from Jeep.
Anyone have any? Any tips on tire sizes for a street jeep? It has 235/70/15s now and they are toast too. Anyone put these on a 97 XJ Cherokee and have any problems?

Yup! All Rambler/AMC front drums are assembled this way. Here's
how I fixed it:

Scroll down about 1/2 or more. It's a long page with lots of stuff.

Depending on the backspacing (if its more than 4.75"), you may contact the lower control arms with the tire right at lock. I run Moabs on my 98 XJ and all I had to do was adjust my steering stops out a bit, but that was for 33's. With stock tires, you may not even have a problem. That tire size is probably the most you can do on a stock XJ. Most people have fender flare contact issues when running the Rubicon take-off's (245/75r16) with no lift. Taking the flares off solves the issue, but that looks like crap. I refuse to take mine off with 6" of lift and 33's, but I can't wheel it until I either lift it a couple more inches or install some aftermarket flares.

Dave; AMC "borrowed" a lot of the front end ideas from
Fomoco when they went away from trunnions in 1970. The
biggest diff would be in placing the spring high on
the top arm. I would cut out the whole shock tower
assy from a 70s and up Rebel or Hornet donor and fool
around with that, see if your 62 matchs up pretty
good.
We did that to a 68 Jav with a 72 donor Humpster some
years ago and when I lost contact with the guy it was
complete and just awaiting small finishing touchs....Russ

this is essentially what the factory did with the '70 jav and amx.
i've often wondered if it would work with a '64-9 american. sure
seems like it ought to...

Mike; good looking start for a Rambler wagon, you
obviously have seen that it was painted rather
rudimentally. Look for rust issues under the sull
plate.
You mentioned it needing brakes. You can update to
later six cyl drums real easy by finding Hornet or Jav
brakes. They will bolt in with just an afternoons
worth of work and you won't beinto a lot of dough as
people are just tossing those out, and this would be
drastic improvement. Plus you can find the early
seventies drum parts off the shelf.
people will recommend discs but it sounds as if you
want to just get it going for the moment.....Russ

Dave, I am currently working on a complete, Mustang II
style bolt in suspension package for AMC. This would
eliminate all of the stock suspension parts like the
strut rods, ball joints, coil springs, tie rod ends,
control arms, steering box and the engine cross
member. This would all be replace with a fully
contained cross member that incorporated a rack and
pinion system with coil over shocks, modern style disc
brakes and tubular a-frames. Not only will this free
up space and cut a ton of weight off the front, the
ride quality will be like that of a modern sports car.
I hope to have this completed by spring. My first
design will be for the 70 and up Javelin/AMXs. After
that, work on what mods we have to do to work in a
trunnion car and then other models if the market is
there.

When I get to a certain stage, I will be looking for
pre-orders to gage whether the investment will be
worth it or not. My goal is to have the complete
front suspension set up ready to bolt in for around
$2000.00. If you think of the price of a quality disc
brake set up alone, this is very reasonable.

i was looking at the carcraft magazine where they put
the new front
suspension on a 65 i think it is mustang. looking at
it, it looks VERY
similar to my 62 classic. this sparked some interest.
would i be able to
adapt all that to my suspension? as everyone knows,
mustangs have a
major abundance of suspension parts. i know the spring
looked like it was
mounted a little more inboard, but does anyone know of
much more
differnce than that? if it might be a lot of work to
adapt that set up, is
there anyone on here who can help me get a disk brake
kit off a concorde?
all the salvage yards around where im from crush
anything older than
about 10 years as soon as it rolls in practiaclly. no
luck around lawton

Thanks for the email Russ!

Sull plate? Sorry, I'm a GM guy just delving into my 1st AMC. We have
sill plates on the floor where the door shuts. Is that what you're
referring to?
I'll be removing the seats and carpet for inspection, and a new carpet.

I want to just get the car going, and have plans to replace the entire
brake system. Maybe I should start researching your suggestion. Would
you have any good pointers as to where to find these used parts? Like I
said, I'm brand new to the AMC world. :-)

As for the body condition, while there most certainly is some hidden
sins under that poor paint job, the body and floor boards are
surprisingly solild. The fenders and quarters appear to only have bondo
on the bottoms. No surprise. The frame needs some work though.

Thanks!
Mike

Mike,

First thing I'd do is get involved with one of the clubs. Club
classifieds are a good way to find parts.

Second, there's a pretty good vendor's list at
http://www.planethoustomamx.com. I'm pretty sure South Texas AMC is on
that list (the website is http://southtexasamc.tripod.com if it's not).
Andre Jacobs runs that business and I've been very happy with the used
sheet metal I've gotten from him so far.

Third, the Kenosha History Center is putting on a show near the end of
July next year. Vending has been great both times I've been there. More
info can be found at
http://www.kenoshahistorycenter.org/content/events4.html (I think AMO
has the actual registration form posted on their site at
http://www.amonational.com). AMO's national meet is the weekend after
the 4th of July in Denver next year and if it's anything like this
years, there will be plenty of vending.

Actually, you need to make sure you support the hub under each stud when
you drive them out. You don't want to warp the flange. Also, you may be
able to get a brake shop to R & R the drums for not much money.
