You won't have a problem with the T-96 and a 196 engine. Unless you
turbo charge it or something. you won't make enough power normally
aspirated to stress a T-96.

My J10 has the same trans and gears with a 258. Runs 1900 rpm at 60 in 4th.
Normal city driving uses 3rd a lot. 3rd in my trans is getting noisey.
I've also used 4lo without locking the front hubs for low speed maneuvering.
Shifting from lo to hi on the move gets a nasty crunch from the transfercase. I
wouldn't recommend it as normal procedure. I have a set of 3.31 diffs from a
Cherokee that would help things if I ever get around to putting them in. :)

The Rambler all right!
It has sat in one spot since the first week of July.
I finally felt up to taking it out for a short drive since it was nice today.
I cycled the key twice to prime the fuel system.
Then tried to start it. It grunted and didn't turn, "arg, dead battery"!
I crossed my fingers and tried one more time and it grunted then spun over a fired right up! I took it out for while and got it warmed up and charged the battery.
It's still a Rambler all right, left it sit for over three months and it starts and runs! :]
I hadn't driven anything till yesterday. It's taking a while to get over all the inactivity from wearing the brace. It's been a slow painfull week and it will take a while yet before I'm even close to being able to look over my shoulder.
I go in the morning to see about my collarbone. I'm hoping it has healed enough the pin can come out. I got my fingers crossed.

Oh we have the same gears -- 2.73 was stock. If I were towing anything very heavy (like a horse and trailer!) I'd have to use low range. I don't plan on doing a lot of towing, or at least not long distance. I did want something capable of towing though, that's what low range is for! Don't know if I want to put the extra EFI system (Renix) I have on it or look for a small 4V carb. Won't do anything until the house is about done, so that leave me a couple years to decide. If the rust doesn't get any/much worse by then I won't mind fixing the rust spots and doing a bit of work to it. I'm going to wait that bit of time to see if it gets much worse before putting much money into it though. If I only drive it 3-4 years then junk or part it it'll be worth what I have in it.
