In my exerience with 60's era Ramblers going to Radial tires eases steering effort.
I'd go with the tire that fits your style. 

If it's not been mentioned yet by others have the car aligned to get as much caster [or at least what an early 80's AMC had] as possible. The added caster will increase steering effort some, but the car will track much better at highway speeds and have less tendancy to "dart around".
