It's a lot of torque, and hard to apply. What most people do
is put the wheel on the car with at least a few lugs, snug,
drop the car onto the pavement, apply the parking brake, and
THEN tighten the nut. Even then the car will want to roll :-)

You can get really close on the torque with a 3/4" drive socket,
extention and breaker-bar. Assemble all that onto the nut so the
breaker bar is horizontal; put a jackstand under the extention
so it's straight out from the axle.

My breaker bar is 18" (1.5 foot). I weight 150 lbs. 1.5 * 150=
225 lbs of torque on the tip of the breaker bar, applied there
with the ball of my foot. I pick up my 40 lb tool box and it's
285 lbs of torque. Go from there.

Wheels to fit AMC cars from junk yard sources are not limited to 14 and
15 inch wheels although there are a lot of wheels manufactured that will
fit these cars. To see a fairly complete list go to;
http://www.amccf.com/
and follow the directions to enter the site and look under technical for
the incredibly large choice of AMC information until you find the wheel
list.
But to continue on into the newer wheels, the Dodge Caravan and Chrysler
T&C used 16 and 17 inch wheels and have the same bolt pattern.
I have a set of Ford Bronco aluminum wheels that look as if they will go
on an AMC car with out interference as far as I checked at this point in
time. I also have a set of 17 inch aluminum wheels that appear as they
might work too from a T&C. Right now I am running the 16 inch Bronco
wheels on my T&C as I blew 2 tires and shredded the tread on a third one
all with in a weeks time and the Bronco Wheels had almost new tires on
them. No sense in wasting good tires. With wheels of this nature you
start getting some interesting off sets which may or may not work in the
long run.
