It's all relative! Us AMC guys see them "all the time" because we look
for them and know where all the local ones are. But there were much
fewer Javelins (period) made than the other pony cars, and the general
automotive public (even pony collectors) doesn't pay much attention to
anything that isn't popular. Even for Javelins a 401 4 speed combo isn't
common though. Fewer than 25% (I'm being conservative, probably 20% or
less) had four speeds. An auto was/is best for most drag racing.

The 230 OHC used a Borg-Warner M-8 (AS-8F) auto according to the IFSJA
site.

That's a cast iron trans, predecessor to M-10/11/12. AMC used the M-8 in
the early 60s behind the 327. I think it has a vacuum modulator, not
positive. 
Jeep 327s used the "universal" (nailhead) pattern TH-400 and adapter. As
Mark says, I've never seen one, but I'm sure there were a few 232s with
the TH-400 running around at one time. Most of those old J-trucks got
used/abused and thrown away -- 20 years later! I've been looking for
one, and just let one slip away!! The one I looked at about a week and a
half ago is gone. Took me that long to decide I really would like to
have one!

Anyone know of a J-10 or older six cylinder stick shift J-truck that
hasn't been re-axled and lifted (lift I can undo, but I want the high
geared axles, no 4.10s, prefer the 80s 2.73s -- it has a low range in
the t/case if needed!) within a couple hours or so of Dover? I've found
a couple, but all are 360 auto, except for one J-20 in PA that was
converted to a 258 four speed -- w/4.10 gears. Not something I want to
drive on the highway! At this point I'll consider an auto six cylinder
or 304 powered truck. I'll even consider a 360 stick shift/327 stick or
auto. 

I'm looking for a runner, ready to drive with minor work, but doesn't
have to look good at all (just not beat/rusted to near death!). Ideally
it would be around $1000, but I'll look at higher priced trucks. I'll
consider a Comanche also -- six cylinder four or five speed, 2 or 4 WD.
The only thing I found nearby is an 86 w/2.8L. I'm thinking about it,
but really don't want to mess with the little V-6. Would get an EFI
conversion or 3.1/3.4 conversion if I had it, but that's more than I
want to mess with. Would rather put the extra Renix EFI system I have on
a 258!

I remember seeing one of these engines stuffed into a Simca Roadster
inside
 
the radiator repair shop in behind Bobby Hines's house in Holcomb N.Y.
some
 
time in the middle 60's. I wonder what ever happened to it?
 
Those were the days when you could do things like this with out running
afoul
 
of some ill-conceived and implemented smog law.

Russ,

Not only can you buy the body, you can buy the entire
car front to back including the uni-body right out of
a catalog today.  Chip Foose built one of these last
year for the BJ auction.  I think the Uni-body and tub
up to the firewall starts around $13000.00 for a coupe
or convertible.  Open up a Year One catalog or any one
of the other Chevy suppliers and buy the fenders,
doors, interior, engine, trans and so on and you know
have a brand new Camaro.  Getting it titled is another
issue though.  Some states are much more lenient in
doing this.  Others, you have to have a VIN from a car
and then show it as a re-bodied car.  

Wouldn't it be nice just to buy all the factory body
panels for our cars instead of having to put together
5 patch panels just to fix a quarter and then you only
have a patched panel that needs a fair amount of body
work to straighten and smooth.

As for rarity, the 71 401 4spd Javelin and AMXs are
both pretty rare when it comes to the muscle car
market.  Look at what some of the other car makes are
bringing for cars with production numbers like these. 
In addition, the 71 had features/options that were 71
only like the console that goes under the dash,
different instrument switches, 10.2:1 compression (for
the early 401s), three different rear window options,
leather interior (not sure if you could get that in 72
or not), Machine wheels, rim blow, etc.  

As a hobby, we need to stop selling our cars short. 
They are worth a lot more than what we have been
getting for them.  AMC is still a great buy when you
consider the market.  Look at the SS AMX for example. 
They made a heck of a lot more Hemi Cudas yet a Cuda
will bring 3-4 times as much money.  Daytona or
Superbird, again more than the SS AMX yet one of those
I have seen bring over $1,000,000.00.  Heck there are
probably still more in existence today then 52 SS they
made.  How about the LS6 Chevelle that brought over
1mil.  Restore you car to the best of your means. 
Take care of it and don't let it waste away.  Some day
that car might make a difference in your life.  I
applaud anyone who gets more than the last AMC of it's
kind.  We can't continue to get more products for them
without those willing to pay up for a car.

I would say there were more 69 Camaros made than the
entire Jav line from 68 to 74. I am not sure of the
production run in 69, but you can even buy a brand new
69 Camaro body today.....Russ

Can anyone tell me if there is a part number on a 343 flexplate, or how
to definitely identify a 343 vs. 360 flexplate? Also the balancer? A
fellow in CHILE is having problems with "engine vibration at mid rpm".
He's not certain the flexplate is original, or the balancer. I'm not
knowledgeable enough with the V-8s to tell for certain what each should
have or how to definitely identify them. The engine is in a 69 Javelin,
which is rare in Chile. VIN indicates the engine is correct, but I'm
unsure of the trans. I do know it should be a B-W M-1x.

i got a bellhousing to mount a t-5 to an amc 304. it was out of a 80's cj with a 6 cyl i was told. i got the fork and throwout bearing also. anyway, i am not sure of the input shaft length. found a company that sells t-5 rated at 300 lbs with an input shaft length of 7.19" and 7.87" there are others that are rated at less lbs to handle with other lengths. shortest is 7.16 and rated at only 230 lbs. anyone know what whould be the right input shaft length to work with that bellhousing? i would rather use one of the 300 lb rated trannys as i plan to have a healthy 304. thanks for all the help.

I don't recognize those lengths.
Mustang input length is commonly referred to as 9 1/4".
That's what you are looking for a 83-92 Ford Mustang length input.

i've seen those numbers; 7.19" for '83-'93 5.0 t5s, 7.87" for '93-4
5.0 and 3.8; 7.41" for 4-cyl ford t5s.

and 7.18" for amc.  btw both 7.18 and 7.19 look to me like rounded
decimalizations for 7 3/16.

ford svt sells a t5 rated at 330 ft-lbs for $1000 or $1100, last i
heard, and they have a 7.19" input.  bw must have an aftermarket t5
with similar specs except for a more reasonable 0.8 5th [the svt's is
0.63, which would be great for a -6th-].

there's an argument for going with a 3rd party vendor though.  most
early cars want a shifter location more forward than the stock
mustang's.  the common trick is to use a chevy s-10 tailshaft housing,
which has about the most forward location of any t5.  a 3rd party
could do this for you at little extra charge.

you'll also want a gm or [i think] 4 cyl ford bearing retainer.  the
v8 fords have a 4.85" retainer diameter, but amc, gm, and i'm pretty
sure 4-cyl fords have a 4.64" size.

clutch disk and pilot bushing can come straignt from a t150 [late
'70s] 3sp.  output yoke too iirc, maybe even tranny mount.

the other thing that makes sense to me is the 5speeds.com cluster
stabilizer, a shimmable billet replacement for the stock sheetmetal
cluster bearing retainer.  if you're doing the tranny yourself, it
would be easy to install the billet stabilizer and the 0.8 5th while
swapping the s-10 tailshaft housing.
