The nailhead pattern trans was also sold as the "universal" TH-400. The
reason is the nailhead had a deep flange on the back, effectively an
inch or so (don't know for sure the measurement) of the bell was made
into the back of the block. Theis made the bell on the trans itself
shallower, allowing plenty of space for an adapter made by the
purchasing company. That's why Jeep, Jaguar, and Rover used the
"nailhead" pattern -- and a few others. They could make their own
adapter and get the GM trans, cheaper if they didn't have enough volume
for a custom case.

The old original Dual-Range Hydramatic (four speed) used by Nash and
others was made with a separate bell housing like the Borg-Warner autos.
IIRC that original Hydramatic bell was cast iron.

Russ, most coil spring companies don't even make "straight" rate springs
anymore. I've always dealt with Coil Spring Specialties
(www.coilsprings.com), but others here have as good a results with ESPO.
I'd order the new springs 10% stiffer than stock. At CSS you can just
tell them 10% stiffer -- they have charts for the springs used. That
will improve handling without affecting the ride to much, but will be
enough stiffer to notice.

For the back you can add a leaf or get new leafs, but I'd get the air
bag type helper/overload springs. That will improve handling and allow a
lot of flexibility. They just clamp on. An on-board compressor is nice,
but not necessary. It's best to replace the included nylon/plastic lines
with brake line though. The plastic lines will leak over time, and can
be hard to get a good seal with when new. I didn't find a listing for
the Eagle on-line, but check J.C. Whitney or call others. The CJ or
XJ/MJ (Cherokee/Comanche) model should fit though. These guys seem like
a good place to start -- they carry Firestone (you'd want the
"Sport-Rite" kit) and Air Lift (ride control) brands. E-mail for exact
application. It looks like the XJ/MJ kit is identical to the old Eagle
kit -- they use the same rear axle. The XJ/MJ kit has an added shock
mount to relocate one of the shocks. The shocks mount differently on the
Eagle, the relocation mounts shouldn't be needed.

Reading the current issue of AIM got me to thinking about production
numbers. The Javelins sold in Aussie land were stamped at Kenosha and
shipped as a "kit" to Australia. Do they count as Kenosha numbers or do
they have a foreign build plate? Likewise, do the cars produced in
foreign countries (VAM et al) count as part of a total production run?
VAM produced a Gremlin based car (forgot what they called it) and are
they reflected in the production numbers for AMC? I doubt it. I had
always assumed that the AMC production numbers for Kenosha and Brampton
reflected total production but might there be a lot more AMC or AMC
derived products out there than what we think?

Just curious

Now this would be interesting to research!
I have the Nailhead adapter setup for a 327. If it would turn out Rangerover went to any of the overdrive trans in a nailhead pattern! I could then maybe adapt a overdrive to a Gen I engine! Cool!
  NAW! Can't be that easy!

Ever watch a sprint car race???!!!
The left front is most always in the air! and the rear is hanging out there in a mean drift!!!
A friend of mine had a Lotus [Espirit? IIRC] and if he drove it in the rain he had to be very carefull it weighed like 15-1700 lbs and would hydroplane like mad with the tires available back then!

I've always wondered why a work around could not be found for this problem!
Could the inline Type PVC not be rerouted to a valve cover or the oil fill tube?
I know that the pan should be in place to keep hot oil splash off the intake, BUT???
I would think you could notch the pan around the oil feed line if needed. It would still stop most oil splash from reaching the intake and pvc if down carefully.

yeah, but even they don't put the engine -right-over- the rear axle!

i have your solution to the rear engine/ reverse rotation issues. as some folks here know i am in the army. in iraq right now. i am a mechanic in the army. i work on hummers. hummers have the portal hubs. the axle shaft goes in on the top, drives a geared hub, and the spindle the wheel is mounted on is lower. well.... hummers use chevy 6.2 or 6.5 turbo diesel engines, and chevy trannys and transfer cases. thing is, the differentials rotate backwards due to the portal hubs. get you a hummer differential to mount up front, and have your spindles as normal front drive spindles. do sorta like a chevy ifs looking front. if i recall correctly, the diffs are dana's, just the pinnion is on the oposite side. would still be easy to get gear sets for, they are just mounted backwards. as for the "flipping" of front axles, dont forget, you have breather holes you would have to seal up, and redrill on the "new" top end..... just my $.02 from iraq.

Yeah, I agree. The valley pan gasket isn't magic. Just notch it
to clear. Not every square inch of the valley pan is needed,
first, and second, you could simply made an umbrella of thin
metal over the section where the crossover tube protrudes into
it if you were paranoid or it looks like a splash area.

Armand,

When installing a valley pan gasket, you need to put
RTV sealant (typically comes with gasket)around all
the water jackets and at the corners front and back
where the rubber end pieces meet the tin. It is best
to make sure the corner detent holes are pushed into
the head to align the gasket as well as pushing the
middle area of the pan down so that the edges pop
under the lip of the head. Best to let the sealant
cure for a day before starting up the engine so that
you don't blow it out of the corners.

Felpro makes the valley pan gasket and Mr. Gasket
makes a paper style. I have both in stock for anyone
who needs them as well as entire gaskets sets.

Thanks,

Nick Alfano

Lately there was some discussion regarding intake
manifold gaskets and
how
to install them. I really thought it was great that we
got some guys to
respond to it. I haven't put an intake on an AMC
engine in maybe 27 or
28
years, and I had completely forgotten about the
features of the metal
gasket. Can anyon eexpand on this and tell us where
sealant is needed
and
where sealant should not be used?? How about the best
source for this
metal
gasket?? Anyone have a good supplier for it??

Thanks,

Armand
