If you're sold on midengine, get the engine 
and
transaxle from a front wheel drive car you like and mount it behind 
the
driver. My $.02 Don

here's my buckets worth:

take a hammer - place it on a cleared table.

spin the hammer - try to make a circle.

you can't.

when all that weight breaks loose it
takes you off the road - out of control
backwards or sideways.

check the PORSCHE Magazine for a
parts seller - he usually takes out
a full page - with the picture of a 911
parts car display.

last one I saw had a Tree come thru 
the drivers door.

I swapped ends one evening in
Moms' '64 356 C coupe when
the rear suspension unloaded
over a gentle roadway rise.

I don't like riding in old VWs since.

My 'Hot Rod' of the future build 
will be akin to an early 1960s
'Cigar' style Formula 1 car -
front engined based around a
dirt tracker generic frame:

a great profiler and 'Trust-Worthy'.
