but synchronized gears are always meshed; it's the synchros that
actually do the engagement/disengagement.  load and cut does tend to
keep the synchros engaged - popping out of gear is a sign of worn
synchros - but they have to stay engaged under both power and trailing
throttle, and that makes me think the tranny would work equally well
turned either way.
