So I've been thinking and drawing over the last year or so ideas
for a rambler hot rod. Six cylinder, sort of "old style" rod,
track-roadster-ish. Two seats. Open wheels (motorcycle-type
fenders), no doors, no roof.
I really want a mid-engine car, but Hallibrand transaxles are
out of my range, but I think I've come up with a scheme for a
rear engine, front drive car, using a jeep or eagle front axle.
I do have this Navarro-built turbo six... but it's not a
requirement, and might not be appropriate to run in the street.
The big chunks lay out OK for a 104" plus or minus wheelbase. The
main problem is engine/front axle rotation and offset. I have
only a Haynes manual for Jeep, though I've seen 'em. I'm only
at the planning stage (and it may never get past that).
Does anyone know:
* Rotation direction for the jeep or eagle front axle?
* How much offset, front driveshaft to centerline of the
car? Looks like 6 - 8" from my crappy drawings.
Big HP isn't a goal, so driveline strength isn't an issue. It
goes without saying it'll be all AMC.
I figure standard hotrod kitcar junk for the rest of it. Weight
distribution won't be all that great (heavy rear), eh, I'm
not racing.

A: You don't say what year J10 or I could tell you more about it and the fun
upgrades. The MJ will likely be a BA 10/5 with bad 5th or 3rd gear popping
out. 4th would be a bad bearing between the front and rear shaft. (I'll have
a good 2wd one soon from my '87 MJ once I get time to do my auto swap)
The shifter on the BA 10/5 is mounted with a round flange and 3 screws.
AX5 didn't come behind the 4.0L and won't fit either. Both it and the AX-15
come with 4 bolt rectangular plate holding them in. (shifter may even be the
same in some years) Only year of Comanche with AX-15 is '91 stock
(production ended @11/91 with very few '92s around) or dealer replaced AX-15
for the BA 10/5 prior to that.
Pass on when you are going to drive back and I will notify the FSJ'ers to
watch for you. We have a network that even transports parts all over the
country! <G>

Going to go look at a J-10 w/258 and four speed tomorrow. All I
know is it "runs good" and isn't rusted out, and is a short bed.
Asking price of $1200 OBO probably means the engine runs but is
on its last leg, and the body might not be rusted out but might
be a little on the beat up side. Same guy also has a tired 4.0L
Comanche with blow-by (could just be the PCV hose...) and pops
out of either 4th or 5th gear (I forget which - indicates a
synchro is bad though). Trans is supposedly the AX-5 or 15, guy
deals in Jeeps and says it's definitely NOT the Peugeot trans.
Wants $650 as is for that one. Have to run it by the wife, but
don't think she'll complain for $1K. Will need/want a truck when
I get to SC anyway. One of these I'd drive down in early
November with a load of "stuff" that needs to go and take a bus
back. Hmmm.... haul the bike down and drive it back? Probably to
cool in November!! Might haul the bike down and leave it too...
less to move in June! Plus if I did brea!

it would be better to have the bike than the riding mower (which
I don't really need here). But if you see someone driving an
older red riding mower down the shoulder of I-95 between D.C.
and S.C in early November, please stop and see what happened!!

A: Can't guarantee how long it will last, but my swaybars get sprayed with
graphite in a can (from work at NAPA) every 6 months or so.

Good Afternoon,
Has anyone used polyurethane sway bar bushings on anything, AMC
or not, and found a method to keep them from "screeching"? I
installed a larger Addco sway bar on my Eagle and although it
seems to work just fine, whenever I go over a dip there is a
distinct screech from the front. I've gone back underneath and
can't seem to find anything obviously wrong. If I push down on
either front fender, I don't get the noise. Any ideas?

I use the top 1/2 of a slant 6 BBD on the AMC base when I rebuild (if I find
one with bad bushings in the Dodge. Common as the slant six doesn't seem
leak lubricant onto the carb naturally like the Jeep motor does)
Another swap (may have been mentioned as I am just skimming old
AMC-digests with a coule quick replies. Moving sucked up all my spare time
lately) would be a Renix Jeep EFI setup or GM TBI setup.

A: Just a quick revisitation of this thread. The Hyundai Stellar and Pony
used a version of the 904 till '86 (same as the '70's Dodge Colt RWD as they
were the same car. The FWD Colt is almost the same as Hyundai Excell) In '87
they used a KM automatic trans (O/D auto) that seemed to me to be closely
related to the AW series used in Jeeps. Made me think about a turbo Mitsu
diesel tractor engine in a Jeep (not the aluminum head version used in
Rangers and D50s, although the bottom end is the same)

I thought that the only applications that would be listed would
be AMC,
Jeep, and Chrysler, but apparently more vehicles used the pan at
least
if not the whole transmission. One weird listing that I have
not
confirmed is accurate is that the Hyundai Pony and Stellar
(Canadian
models) used the pan gasket. Maybe something Mitsubishi and
Chrysler
had going and used the pan and gasket?

The rotation for the front axle is the same as for the rear. The transfer case is chain driven over to the side, so the front driveshaft rotates the same as the crankshaft. You can't put the engine in the middle facing back and run an angled drivesahft to the front. But nice try!
A Corvair transaxle (uses SBC pattern) or some front drive transaxle (Premier ZF auto?) might work, but would require an adapter.
The offset for a Jeep front axle is about 8", but I can't say for sure. If you figured out how to run the trans on the front of the engine you could always use rear axle alxes (hmmm... doesn't sound right, but you know what I mean!) and center the diff in the front. Or leave it offset and run through a transfer case. There are some front drive car haulers made from 4x4 trucks and car trailers. The truck frame is cut off just behind the cab and a low trailer frame welded to the back. The front axle does all the pulling, the rear output is sealed in some manner. I haven't had a close enough look to see how it's sealed -- just sticking a yoke in won't work, something has to keep it there!

Jim, the J-10 is a 1982. 258/2V, four speed, I think the guy said it's a 207 or 208 transfer case. Bone stock, hasn't been lifted/mudded/trailed much, mostly an old work truck the PO decided to retire. It's a bit rough overall, but not to bad for a 24 year old truck with little work done to it and pretty well used. Inside of bed is nice, but some rust through on the sides in places. Cab is pretty solid and straight though. Dash pad is twisted, but I looked at an FSJ Cherokee he had for parts (has about 20 Jeeps of various models/years) without the pad. Fill in the pad mount holes and it's a decent looking all steel dash. For $1200 it looks... well... like a $1200 4x4 truck. Needs a donut gasket in the exhaust and the radiator replaced. I never saw one patched with bondo before! The parts Chero is donating a radiator (it's 258 also). I'm planning on offering $950 for it. He told me for asking price he'd change the radiator, less I'd have to do it. Might need brakes and such b!

long trip, but ran pretty good considering the exhaust leak. Turns out I knew more about AMC/Jeep sixes than he did -- we talked a good bit and looked at several he had around.
The Comanche (I bet it IS a BA-10/5 under there!) would probably be the best truck, but it's hard to pass on a J-10 in halfway decent shape! If I just use it for a work truck over 3-5 years and never fix it up it's worth the price though.
