The backing made onto the fabric is the problem, unfortunately. You'll
have to replace the fabric itself. Pull the headliner, pull the fabric,
then clean the panel with a stiff bristle brush (but not a wire brush!)
to remove all the old foam backing. Then you can glue on new fabric.
Some cloth shops sell the fabric, but there may be places that
advertise relining headliners that will supply the fabric and do it
quicker and easier than you can. Since it's an unusalua car (mostly
they do GMs), I'd remove and reinstall the headliner myself. They
should give you a price break on that.

Has anyone on the list done this successfully?

Todd,

There is no off-the-shelf crank available at this time
for a 401. I have kicked it around for some time and
have had a couple people interested but not enough yet
for me to make the investment. I am going to another
company in a month or so to see if I can get the price
range where I want but even then, it would be a while
and require some pre-sale.

I do have a brand new custom billet Moldex crank for a
401. It has a 4" stroke with AMC main journals, front
and rear hub and SBC rod journals. This would make a
nice stroker out of a 401 with a 6" rod.

The headliner is not just a piece of cloth. There is a foam backing on the headliner cloth maybe 1/4" thick. I guess its purpose is to smooth out the imperfections of the moulded shell and give it a softer feel. When the headliner sags, it is actually this foam backing which has deteriorated. You could simply glue the cloth back onto the shell, but it won't look the same as it did originally.

I was in the same situation with my Javelin. The headliner saged, but the cloth was in good shape. I thought about gluing some foam onto the cloth, but was told, from a number of sources, that this would never come out looking right. To do it right, you have to get new foam backed cloth - easier said than done if you want the factory original pattern. I ended up getting a non-original cloth since I don't intend to get the car concours judged. I saw another Javelin done this way, and you hardly noticed the headliner was wrong because the colour was complimentary. It was easy to attach the cloth to the moulded shell with some 3M spray 77 adhesive. The shell was out of the car at the time. I used regular construction adhesive to glue the shell to the roof of the car. I don't know how well either of these adhesives hold up to super-heating as the car is stored in the garage and doesn't get any direct sunlight.

If you're looking for original cloth, Tony Zamisch advertizes it on his site:
http://www.amx-perience.com/california_classic_amc.htm

There may be other sources as well.

i learned not to say, " I got bit by dog yesterday, How much worse can it get"?!!!
Yes, I actually said that as I left our cabin to go mountain biking on Sunday!
Next time I will keep my mouth shut!
I found out I only needed two booster shots to be safe from rabies as I had a full series 12 years ago. I got the first Monday night in the hospital second yesterday, so I'm good for 10 more years! Over $200 a shot though! talk about ouch in more ways than one!

Write complaints to the moderators. We are having probs with idiots
(probably members of ELF) flagging any old car ads in Seattle too. Do you
have an actual account? That's how I got around it here. Mine are
pre-approved and people who flag them get warnings for inappropriate
behaviour.

I have no idea, there was nothing that should have got it
deleted. I know there is a large group of people that flag ads
to get them removed just because it is something they don't like
and I have noticed that most of the AMC ads in this area have
been being removed that way. Even mine have been deleted a few
times and there was nothing that violated the rules or anything.

As long as head liners have been brought up, I do not know how many
varieties there are in material, but one of them for 1970 was vinyl
material, also attached to the molded head liner with a foam
intermediate layer. The foam deteriorates and the head liner comes down.

This can be re-attached in the following manner.
By removing all of the molding around the tops of the windows the molded
headliner can be removed out through the side windows of the car, this
is a 1970 Javelin now, I do not know if an AMX has a vinyl head liner
option.
It does help in removing the headliner to first open all of the windows
and I used a wide putty knife to help delaminate any glue that still
retained the head liner to the roof of the car.
The foam is not cleaned up from head liner or the vinyl. It is the foam
that gives the texture to the vinyl. The head liner is then laid up side
down on a flat surface, such as a drive way, in the sun. This might be
over done in a southwestern state or an area such as Phoenix but in San
Jose California I used my drive way on a sunny fall day.
The vinyl material is carefully removed completely from the molded
shell.
Then a generic Spray Bottle is used mixing up a 50% solution of Elmer's
Glue or equivalent wood working glue and water. It is now time to
re-attach everything. By spraying liberally the molded shell and the
back surface of the vinyl material the material is then worked back onto
the shell. The heat from the sun will help keep the material flexible
and the 50% mixture of Elmer's Glue and water will dry rather quickly
holding everything together. Once everything had dried you can
re-install the shell back into the car, by re-installing the window
molding etc, the shell will be held in place.
You do NOT want to use a 3M spray glue material for this project as it
will dissolve the vinyl leaving an effect that is less than
satisfactory.
For those of you who are saying "Oh Yeah (Wink Wink) this will never
work!!!!" That is the same reaction I had until 4 more guys said "yup,
and it works fine too!"
So I tried it almost 15 years ago. Works fine, lasts long time. If you
just want to put up a small section peel back the vinyl or use a syringe
to inject the 50% mixture of Elmer's glue into the bubble formed as
things are coming apart and used a rolled up piece of cardboard wedged
into the interior somewhere holding a pillow against the part of the
head liner under repair.
I do not think this would be a viable solution for a cloth head liner,
but it will work well with vinyl.
John

Is there a website to check to see if possible rain
showers will cancel this for July 22nd? It's getting
late, didn't realize I wasn't getting any List emails
since July 11th. Anyway, if these are going out,
please respond directly to Gremlingts@xxxxxxxxx,
please. Hoping that All AMC day is still on, planning
on leaving early, but don't want to drive all teh way
for nothing, although I have some used book store side
trips planned already. :)
So, if it's on, hope to see people there. Bye,
