" Concerning the section on this page about the TFI upgrade, the 300 Ford 6 is 4.9
" litres, not 3.8.

ford's other inline, the 3.3/4.1, used the same tuneup parts
late-'70s/early-'80s. 'inline' is the key word here.

" Also, there is an easier upgrade to the Motorcraft ignition that looks more
" stock than the TFI. Ford has a stock looking high-voltage coil that one can use
" insead and it fits the AMC bracket. Add the large cap and wires, etc. and away
" you go.

fwiw the tfi coil is supposed to be more efficient, making the hot
spark with faster rise and less current draw.

After the warm weather of this past weekend, upper 90's with 65% humidity, I thought it would be nice to look into getting cool air from the AC in the 70 Hornet. The wife didn't mind that the AC didn't work, for her the hotter the better, but I like being able to retreat behind the glass with cool, dry air. I managed to get my hands on nine cans of R12, $3/can, and a can tapper. It took me a minute or two to remember the in's and out's of the process, but job got done with the desired results. In all about two and quarter pounds to clear the sight glass.

While under the hood, charging the system, I noticed the AC belt was whipping around a bit so I decided to pick up a new set of belts, Gates #7360 for the fan & alternator and #9660 for the AC & PS. I checked the internet and O'Reilly's had the Gates brand for the best price, but still $34 for the pair. I thought it would be a quick run into town, grab the belts and back to the farm, about four miles round trip. Pulled into the parking lot, hopped out and headed into the store. I got to the counter and looked around, but the three people on duty were at the front window looking out at the Hornet guessing at the year and model. One was a young lady exercising restraint and just listening to the other two proving how little they really knew about AMC. You know, ?It?s better to remain silent and thought a fool than speak out and remove all doubt.?

I cleared my throat and the one with ?manager? on his shirt responded. ?What can I get you?? I rattled off the Gates numbers, told him I?d been on the website and they should be in stock. He tried to sell me their import brand, much cheaper, I stuck to my guns, ?Gates will be fine.? Then he needed to check to make certain I had the right numbers, no problem there I tend to be a little dyslexic some days, but not today. After the usual questions about the car I made my way to the door and left. Normally I don?t mind talking up the Hornet, but I had a schedule to keep and I wanted the job done before my wife got home. This was Tuesday afternoon and we have a standing date for pizza and beer on Tuesdays. Tonight was Mimo?s in Forreston, my home town about thirteen miles from the farm, just a nice ride to test the AC.

I backed into the hawgshed, no hogs, popped the hood and started changing the belts. The AC belt didn?t look all that bad and after rolling it over a few times I found this:

AM 3191030, original? And on the well worn fan & alternator belt, AM 3185717.

Oh, the pizza was great, the beer was cold and so was the AC.

Jack

Hi;
I am a new member located in Limington Maine. I have owned one other AMC
product years ago, a 1973 model I bought non running for $50. Ran it for
6 months with a slippling clutch and sold it for $25. Nice engine never
smoked. Anyway, this week I purchased a non running 1986 Jeep Cherokee
with a 5 speed transmission and 2.8L V6 engine. I replaced the fuel pump
and installed a new radiator and battery and started it up. Hasn't run
for about 5 months. Started a little hard but it ran. It sounded like a
sewing machine but the oil pressure was 40PSI so I let it run a while. As
it warmed up it ran slower and slower so I cranked the mechanical throttle
stop up to compensate for the time being. AFter 15minutes the oil
pressure was down to 15PSI and the exhaust was black and RPM were down to
550 with the mechanical throttle stop all the way out. It finally stopped
running.

I decided to look for the cause of the valve noise and removed the right
valve cover where most of the noise was comming from. I found that the
valve cover was dented and could see marks from the rocker arm hitting the
dent. I straightened this problem out and checked the valve lash using
the procedure in the trusty Haynes manual I bought. I discovered that all
the pushrods were loose and the rockers accordingly. Following the Haynes
procedure I first tightened the hold down bolt until the pushrod wouldn't
turn with finger pressure, then tightened the rocker bolts 1.5 turns. I
restarted the engine and it did not sound any better. I changed the oil
to 20-50 and replaced the stupid oil filter (thanks GMC!!). I restarted
the engine and let it warm up again, drove it a little in the driveway and
noted that it has very little power, stalling it a number of times in
first gear while trying to turn it around on a little hill.

I checked the timing and found it off the mark (couldn't even see it) so
I loosened the distributor clamp and turned it until I could see the
timing mark. The manual said nothing about disconnecting anything so I
assume you just adjust the base timing in the normal fasion. Setting it
to the factor required 16BTDC the engine slowed down so much I could
barely keep it running even with someone inside with their foot on the
accelerator. Something is obviously not right here. Park it for the day.

Next day it will not start. Tries, but will not stay running. AFter
running down the battery and playing with the distributor position I
checked the exhaust manifolds. THe left side was quite warm but the right
side (the side I did the valve lash adjustment) was just barely warm. SO
I take the valve cover off again and check the valve lash again. Most of
the pushrods are loose so I again readjust them. Keep in mind that I have
now tightened the rocker arm hold down nuts three turns from their
original positions several days ago. I turned the engine over manually
after removing the plugs and watched the rocker arms. They all move up
and down about the same distance with one exception which I recheck and
find OK. It started to rain so I did not attempt to start it up.

I would like to know why the rockers needed readjustment again, does it
seem likely the hydraulic lifters are all collapsed? Does it seem
reasonable that this problem is related to the black smoke, poor idle (and
sooty spark plugs)?? I was told by the PO that this engine ran fine other
than "leaking a little oil" (gushing would be my description, the rear
seal is shot!!). I have not checked compression yet, wanting to get the
valve lash taken care of first. I have also not attempted to adjust the
left valves because I wanted to make sure I was doing it right in the
first place...

Any ideas or experience with this engine and problem would be appreciated.

Also, does anyone have any opinions on replacing the carb (2ESE Rochester)
with something better/less complicated and more reliable?

Best Regards
Howard Allen

I asked this before but I misplaced the valuable information. I have the
1975 Matador Wagon and wondered if there was someone that has
weatherstripping and extras for the windows.

Thanks again,

Now that I'm driving the Hornet daily zeroing in on a few of the minor adjustment has become a higher priority. Like the glove box door, it just doesn't align properly when closed. NO, I'm not that picky, but close. My main complaint is the cold or high idle is too low or even non-existant. I've looked in the Motor manual and the adjustment procedure isn't very clear. Can anyone explain the adjust process for this problem? 232 with a one barrel carb, automatic transmission and choke.

Thanks,

Jack

black exhaust sounds like the choke is sticking. you could also need a
general tuneup.

if the motor is running very rich, the cat could be running very hot and ready
to melt down if it hasn't already. and a plugged cat wouldn't help your loss
of power.

many of us have discovered there's no substitute for the factory svc man. it

timing.

when you say 'loose', do you mean rattly-about-to-fall-out, or merely able to
spin between fingers?

" left valves because I wanted to make sure I was doing it right in the

i'm wondering if you have the rockers too tight to start with. if the valves
are never closing, that would explain why that bank is cold.

you could also try 'gunk' brand motor flush in the oil. if the po hasn't been
good about oil changes there could be a lot of crud in the oil system and that
could be preventing your lifters from pumping up. i've had good luck with it,
but ymmv.

" Any ideas or experience with this engine and problem would be appreciated.
"
" Also, does anyone have any opinions on replacing the carb (2ESE Rochester)
" with something better/less complicated and more reliable?

maybe that carb just needs a good cleaning and/or rebuild.

do you have emissions checks up theyah in maine?

you could swap an entire injected s-10 2.8, or for even more power a camaro
3.4. i believe a neutral-balanced ['88-up] s-10 flywheel will work; i know the
camaro one is too thick, and pre-'87 2.8s - jeep and gm - are externally
balanced, so the original 'wheel can't go on the newer mill.

It took me a month of fiddling to get mine "functional". it's one
of those most-annoying features... if I adjust it to close OK,
it rattles constantly (the U-shaped loop in the dash-mounted
latch). The door when closed stands vertically, encouraging
rattles. I tried rubber bumpers (slight force door-to-dash) (too
fussy, and they fell off), absolute perfection in adjust, ent. I
finally settled for too-tight; the door requires a bit of a slam,
but then at least the latch is under a bit of tension and stops
the rattle.

Oh yeah the door doesn't perfectly align with the rest of the
dash insert. The dash door escuctheon is of course separately
adjustable, but it still doesn't align.

I am reminded that my car probably cost $2500 new, and is not
a hand-fit Rolls where some craftsmammal spent a week adjusting
the brass hinges.

forgive tha lack of caps and such. on saturday while biking just outside of morganton my sons and i got chased by a pack of dogs and i goy bit. second time for me and a wild animal in 12 rears. good news is i only have to get two booster shots since i've already had full series and the sries is good for ten years.
now for the worse news, on sunday while bike riding in the wooded section at wisp ski resort i got a little too far off the trail to the right and into the grass. at tha point i either struck a rock or log or the high weeds tangled the front wheel and lock. i did full head on over handle bars into the ground.
the end result of which is a fractured collar bone, 4 fractured vertebrae[ one in the neck -C7, three in the back -T3-5] lucky for me i had my good helmet on as it absorbed most ot the impact and shattered as designed.
i'm now in back and neck brace for the next three months. no lifting of anything weighing more than 5 lbs.
so for the rest the summer all projects seem to be in limbo. good things are, i'm not paralyzed and seem to have suffered no nerve damage. i've got good insurance. still not how i planned to get out of working overtime. this will make the summer go real slow!
