No one wants to see a 70' AMX get crashed and I dont want to try and replace parts for it if something like that occurs. And in the long run the car is worth more in stock configuration than as a race car. Here are the details on the car. Originally a 390/4spd comodore blue car. Right now it has a full drivetrain with a 290 and T-10 which may run. Im not sure because I never attempted to start it. Needs a carb at least and a few other things I am sure. But motor/trans/driveshaft/rear is all there in the car. The body is being worked on right now at the shop and will be 100% straight and rust free. Extremely solid body on this car. Ram air hood in good condition as well but none of the other ram air parts are there. Inside the car only the dash frame remains. No other interior is in the car. The front windshield is busted. I do have a rear piece of glass for it. Off hand I do not know if how much of the door or quarter glass remains. Front and rear bumpers will need to be rechromed. The tail lights are in decent shape as well. It will also be in need of a wiring harness. The car has a clear title. I do have an early 390 block and crank with later rods that may be worked into a deal. So I would actually like to trade the car for a 70 Javelin of similar value. A 360/4spd car would be best. I would also entertain a decent Spirit AMX/GT with a 304/4spd in it. If someone has either one of these in a race car configuration looking to trade that is all the better. Or $4000 cash will do. If anyone is interested please email me at adtarr@xxxxxxxxx I am located in the Denver CO area. Car ran great, got 20mpg, rarely drove under 70 (rarely over 75). About 2000 miles in a week. Half way, had to retard the spark about 3 degrees to take the cheap indian res 86-octane gas. But today, though otherwise running good, I have a nasty backfire, at low car speed/wide-open-throttle, typical "bog" territory; take off from a traffic light up a mild hill, heavy load, WOT at about 1600 rpm (auto trans), lots of backfire. Back off throttle, accellerates fine; WOT, backfires. Once RPM is up, it doesn't. Carb is a Weber 32/36DGEV on a 258; 904 auto trans, 2.73 axle, stock tires. What causes backfire under this condition? I'd think timing, except that I just adjusted it very closely, checked vacuum and mechanical advance. Since I did the road adjustment I can't tell you precisely what static is; I had it about 7btdc static, it's probably no about 4btdc. Could it be not enough accell pump squirt? The pump lever on this carb had a deep groove from wear (I bought it used). I filed it all flat and readjusted, but the pump diaphragm could be leaking (again). (I also have a high rpm burble, wide open throttle also, say 3400+ rpm at 70 mph, that I think is from leaning out, either jetting or inadequate fuel pump. It's not strictly RPM, but total fuel demand high speed and WOT.) ------------------------------ Message: 6 Date: Tue, 20 Jun 2006 04:12:55 -0000 From: <francis.swygert@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx> Subject: Re: [AMC-List] 65 American speedo To: <glkirkbuilders@xxxxxxx>, <amc-list@xxxxxxxxxxxx> Message-ID: <8B4C911BEBA5E24888E353FF362B9E7702E65FB8@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx> Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" Gary, I bet that's not the original trans! Sounds like the speedo is being driven backwards. What year is the car? 64 and later Americans, 63 and later Classic/Ambo have the speedo cable driven UNDER the output shaft. If you look where the abcle comes out of the trans it's low enough you should be able to tell it's driving under the shaft. If not, pull the cable from the trans and then you can look in the hole and tell that the speedo cable gear is under the output shaft for sure. Sounds like yours is driven from ABOVE the output shaft like PRE 64 Americans and PRE 63 Classic/Ambo. I had the same problem with a 63 American which had a later model 65 transmission. The cable gears are the same as I recall, but the gear on the shaft is different and must be chagned also. What I did was get an early model extension housing and swap it and the gear. As long as the trans model is the same (in this case a T-35), the extension housings will interchange. You might be able to just change the gear on the shaft without changing the extension housing, I'm not sure. The high mounted gear is difficult to get the cable in on a later model car though. That's what makes me think you have a 64 or later car with an earlier transmission housing. You don't have to remove the trans to get the extension housing and speedo drive gear off. The gear is held on by a large snap ring -- the kind that's hard to get off unless you have the special tool to do it, but once the ring is off the gear slides right off. -----original message ----------------------- Date: Monday, June 19, 2006 08:42 AM From: Gary L. Kirk <glkirkbuilders@xxxxxxx> Frank, The problems are, this one swings wildly from 0 to 120 wheras the other one just jumped a little and clicked annoyingly loud. I put in a new cable which turned out to be a little long. There fore first thing the plastic insulation got a little melted but I don't think it hurt it. It seems to spin fine and smoothly. BTW the tranny has to be just about removed to get new cable in. Both the heads seem to be not too dirty. Is there a mechanism inside the bell? ------------------------------ _______________________________________________ AMC-List mailing list AMC-List@xxxxxxxxxxxx http://www.amc-list.com/mailman/listinfo/amc-list End of AMC-List Digest, Vol 5, Issue 41 ***************************************
