I used to work for TCI in Miss. They put out a quality transmission. I would recommend them. I have had bad luck with AAMCO...good luck...eddie walker

Frank, The problems are, this one swings wildly from 0 to 120 wheras the 
other one just jumped a little and clicked annoyingly loud. I put in a new 
cable which turned out to be a little long. There fore first thing the 
plastic insulation got a little melted but I don't think it hurt it. It 
seems to spin fine and smoothly. BTW the tranny has to be just about removed 
to get new cable in.
Both the heads seem to be not too dirty. Is there a mechanism inside the 
bell?

what has worked for me in the past, growing up on a farm and using them, go to your local farmer coop store, get a bottle brush for calf bottles. they are long, the brush pole you can bend if you need, the bristles are wide, and sometimes fine for getting that little tiny bit in the corners. they have worked wonders for me in the past with a little bit of that purple juice. if you rather not go that way, somthing else i might try is sand. you want something finer to scrub a little better. rocks and "pee" gravel will get the larger chunks of stuff if you had scale build up in there. but you will see scratch marks thru the crud where the rocks never "scrubbed".  after a good scrubbing, and all the oil and crud is out, and it is still discolored, maybe try a little bit of bleach in there? not sure how that would work in a burp tank. always seems to turn my cloths white.... LOL. hope this has been of some help.

AMC first started the button as a Mod on sixes in the mid eighties as a repair for knocking due to cam walk. Asd early as 87? IIRC it was standard fair for the six. You should be able to get a bolt button and spring from a dealer or the core pile at your nearest Junkyard. Failing that and real desperate I may be able to let you have one. I know I have one spare. If I have two, I might, I suppose I could be forced, Nudge, Nudge, Wink, Wink to let you have one.
Any 258 or 4.0L after 87 or so should have one in place, try 90's to be sure.

They're wonderfully simple -- the cable from the trannie spins a bar
magnet inside an aluminum cup.

The speedo pointer is attached to the aluminum cup. There's a light
spring that returns the pointer to zero.

The spinning magnet induces electrical current in the aluminum cup;
since it's just a big short the current turns immediately into a
magnetic field. The faster the cable/bar magnet spins, the larger the
current in the cup. This attracts to the bar magnet, pulling the
cup/pointer up the scale. One of those breathtakingly simple, reliable,
accurate things that went unchanged for 60 - 80 years.

Pretty much nothing ever goes wrong with them. The cable wears out
though, and gets kinked from being attached to an old car. About 99.9%
of speedo problems are in the cable.

The speedo in my 70 Hornet has a little problem; the bar magnet is
scuffing ever so faintly inside; you can hear it in the dash cluster (a
faint ching ching ching...) at 20 - 40 mph. Probably I did this, when I
had the dash cluster apart on my bench for a few months while restyling
it.

You should never lube the dash unit. The pointer/cup pivot has no force
on it and barely moves, there's no need to touch it.

This last little detail is almost certainly the problem. The cable
insert winds up, catches on a kink, bump or melted spot in the housing,
then lets go, flinging the pointer to 120. Speedos that do what you say,
100% of the time it's a cable problem.

The good news is, pretty much any speedo cable housing with the right
trannie end will fit your car. Some will be too long by 6" or so, BFD.
I've never seen an AMC speedo end that didn't fit. For automatics, it's
pretty much either a BW end or a Torqueflite end.

The factory does a good job of locating and mounting the speedo cable
away from the hot exhaust, etc, but with time and inexpensive
aftermarket exhaust systems, they all seem to end up getting cooked. You
have to make very sure you keep the speedo cable far way from the
exhaust and tie it down well.

I also insulate the speedo cable with slit heater hose and plain old
household aluminum foil folded 4 - 6 times. Aluminum foil makes a
fantastic heat insulation. I'd guess that the speedo cable should be a
minimum of 4" from the exhaust.
