afaik you can just replace the stub o/d tailshaft etc with an
open-drive setup - or alternatively you could go the other way, if you
were lucky enough to find a rare t14+o/d or t15+o/d setup and wanted a
full-synchro tranny. i was once told a t14+o/d was exactly the same

" Anyone know if a '71 up bell mount to this transmission?

if i'm right, the '66-'74 t-10 bell has a square pattern that this

that's true, all but 2bbl sticks two years had a more radical cam,

In N.Y. state after a car is over 25 years old it only has to pass a
safety inspection and nothing emissions in N.Y.. That leaves me in the
area that I can remove all the useless add on's that were added by AMC
to pass the emissions at the time which made the engines of the mid to
late 70's run poorly and have poor gas mileage and actually mine run
cleaner with a few modifications that I made that were not allowed back
then. I did them anyway and the cars always passed the sniffer. Is there
somthing wrong here???? A 74 car with a re-jetted Holley Economaster
carb and points with a re-curved dist. and an Acell Super Coil, a B&M
Trans Pack set on firm, i got 17-18 in the city and 28-29 on the highway
with E-60-14 Bias ply tires in th late 70's. With a Hornet Hatchback
that was just over 3,000 lbs.

I am looking for a passenger side kick panel for my 74 Javelin. Green would
be great but color not as inportant, however it must be in real good

Looking for a set of 4 Magnum 500s. These will go on my 65 American with the
original 6 banger, so they can be on the smaller side. (not even sure if
more than one size was used.) I am not sure of any different backsets
either? I will consider any usable set, altho a set painted up the proper
way would be nice. I do not need the center caps but do need a set of the
retainers. I can get the chrome rings anywhere. I can be reached anytime at

I agree that using/rebuilding the 727 I already have would be a wise choice.
Just thought I'd ask about available 3 speeds, ya never know!

Andrew's comments in a later post about using a beefed-up 998 would work as
well, and is worth looking into. I don't intend to haul a trailer full of
bricks, just want the capability to take the American on a trailer to car
shows behind the wagon.

I also don't really want a floor shift if I can avoid it. The idea of doing
a 4 sp on the column like your friend's Cheby truck is interesting, never
thought of that! But, I just sold a good T10 combo as luck would have it.

Something I do have, that I had intended to get rid of, is one of the "fake
toploaders". These were 4 speeds, but 4th was an OD, and were produced in
the late 70's. Mine has a "D7" tailshaft code, which is '77 in fordspeak,
and was built in '77 or '78 from what I can find out. These supposedly
don't have alot of torque capability - they weren't built for performance -
but they might have sufficient strength for what I want, not sure. I
haven't actually found any accurate torque ratings for them.

The Gear Vendor's OD would be ideal behind the 727, but I think if I was to
spend that kind of money, I could do things cheaper, er, I mean, more cost
effective, by buying a well-built 700R4 and install using an adapter from
Advance Adapters, or buy one used as they are out there in the Jeep
community. I haven't looked in awhile, but I think you can buy the R4's
already built from TCI or the like for ~$1500 or so.

I do have access to a free 200R4 that came out of a SS Monte Carlo - like an
early-mid '80's car. These supposedly were the good ones. Not sure what it
would take to make it worthy for my purposes.

I think this just keeps putting me back to the 727 sitting there quietly
underneath one of my workbenches...

-------> Joe, according to one 1976 SAE
specifications sheet, the 1V 258 put out 110 hp and
the 2V put out 120 hp. The sheet I have doesn't list
cam specs, but it does list that option only on the
Pacer and CJ7. I personally don't think it would
require anything more than a carb and manifold for
slightly less than a 10% increase in rated hp.

just as well, i think. the amc t10s are all performance oriented and
relatively close ratio, and even the later s3 super t10s weren't rated
that high in torque cap.

now, a toploader with jeep gears [3.52 1st] and maybe 31 spline
mainshaft would be well suited and hard to break...

this would be excellent for some late-'70s amc owner who always wanted
a 3sp+o/d but only has the 3sp; it's a straight drop-in driveline wise.
[ummm if it's an iron cased side shifter, the srod input shaft is 1/2"
too long, though it's swappable]

ford also used 'fake toploaders' in pickups well into the '80s ['87?],
but they are almost a different box - larger bearings inside and out,
and gear ratios all slightly off suggesting stronger internals. dunno
what engines they were used with, but offhand a fair chance they'd take
tow duty well. you're still stuck with a floor shifter.

advance adapters. adapter ring made to allow gm th400s to serve in
place of jeep th400s, but also adapt any other gm auto and could also
mount stick bellhousing. on your own for 200-4r flexplate though.
again a towing/rv buildup. some folks consider these stronger than
700r4s. btw they're the desired swap for older gms; same length/spline
as th350, same rear mount loc as th400.

i've heard that a '76-'82? ['narrow track'] cj amc20 is the same or
close. of course you need one with a centered diff, and you need to
change the jeep 5x5.5" hubs for car 5x4.5" ones. to that end you'd
want one with 10" brakes; you can just slip late-'70s 10" car drums
on after the hub swap.

this all assumes the cj rear -is- a good match.

another possibility if you're not worried about originality, is a
'73-6 dart v8/disk 8.25" rear. width is very close to the american,
disk brake darts have a 4.5" bolt circle [lh thd one side though], and
the 8.25 was considered strong enough for 318s.
