I have an 82 Spirit 4.2 litre (258), with a 5 speed manual trans. It
is in need of a clutch, but the parts stores around here are saying the
dont have a listing for a 5 speed, just a 4 speed. Does anyone know if
they use the same, disk, pressure plate and release bearing? Thanks

that year they are; in fact the 5sp is based on the 4sp.

Many thanks to Frank, Aaron, Mark I and Mark II for the responses on my
stock distributor question. I now have a lot more options. If this is
how the message board always works then I'd say it's pretty mind
blowing.

M@rk [markmel77@xxxxxxxxx] please have your buddy with the 73 Javelin
AMX PC interior get in touch with me if he hasn't gotten his car in the
71-74 Javelin AMX Registry. I'm still looking for new owners to add to
the registry. Let's get em all signed up soon.

If anyone has a 71 Javelin AMX that is undergoing a restoration please
feel free to contact me. I am almost done getting the mechanical issues
put to bed on a car that's been garaged since 1986. I brought this car
home Memorial Day weekend in 2004. Two years later I finally got the
engine running. With 3 kids I'm slow and very broke.

Electric Blue 360 4bbl 4-speed with a/c, PS, PB, 3:54 gears, heated rear
glass, Edelbrock R4B and finned valve covers, Edelbrock 650 carb and
Machine wheels. We broke in the engine last night and hope to have the
brakes functional by the weekend. We'll see how long the Eastwood paint
holds up on the factory exhaust manifold. I completely removed the
harness and cleaned every wire/connector, added new brake booster and
MC, new brake lines, new clutch, new pistons, re-built HB, re-built
early 71 cylinder heads (3196291) had all reciprocating parts
re-balanced, had a machine shop bore/hone block .30 over, re-work crank,
new bearings and seals, new camshaft, new oil pan, NOS belts and hoses,
NOS Carter fuel pump, send the receiver dryer out for re-build, re-cored
the radiator, tested the condenser and a/c compressor for leaks, gas
tank boiled out and the list goes on and on.

Not an urban legend, I talked to the Dent Mechanic who does this at my
dealer about my Eagle, and he said because of the age of the paint that
there was a good chance of cracking...

I came across the above combo this week-end for $375,
seems complete. It is a 68 combo, out of a Jav. I also
have a 68 343-4v sitting around doing nothing. Is this
a direct bolt on swap?. Is the same tranny and clutch
used with both engines?.....Russ

Russ,

Different flywheels for different reciprocating mass weights, 290 vs 343...
Aren't all AMC V8s externally balanced on the flywheels?

Yes, the flexplates too. The 290 will swap out with the 343 so long as
you keep the 290 balancer and flywheel. The 290 4V was rated at 225hp
and the 343 4V was rated at 285hp so they may have used a different
version of the T10. IIRC the 343 4V got the M12 auto as did the 390 and
the 343 2V got the M11 auto as did the 290, so it would make sense that
they used a heavier duty version of the T10 with the 343 4V. Speculation
on my part. Compare part numbers on the tranny's. There was also a
close ration T10 and a wide ratio so there are many variables, including
what was available on the shelf when the car went together.

require care to seal right, but even a monkey could assemble an O-ring

SNIP
The 290 will swap out with the 343 so long as you keep the 290 balancer
and flywheel.
SNIP
?
AMC V8 engines are externally balanced using the harmonic balancer
(damper) and the Flywheel.

The 290 harmonic balancer will stay with the 290 engine
The 290 Flywheel will stay with the 290 engine.

The 343 will have it's own harmonic balancer.
The 343 will have it's own fly wheel.

Clutch parts are probably identical as they have no bearing on the
balance of the engine.

As long as you keep the right parts on the right engines you can switch
them around all you want with no problems.
John.

Now I know why AMC moved the temp sending unit from thr front of the head
back to the rear of the head. The darn fan cools the unit off so much up
front, you never get an accurate reading. This is on the 232 /258 engines

I assume the same reason also! It's a more pessimum place to measure
temp.

Does anyone know if there are different value senders? My dash temp
gauge doesn't match the TSH at all plus it's just crazy. The dot is 140F
(OK...) but the beginning of the "normal" range is 200F; about 20% up is
over 210F, and I have no idea what the far end would be and I ain't
measuring it!

(I was measuring with a good K-type thermocouple in the radiator top
hose, eg. water outlet temp into radiator. I figured it's got to be
hotter there since on exit it picks up all that heat. I turn the
electric fan off as needed to let temp. rise controllably at idle.)
