I have to second Tom's assesment. The differential and ring gears are
the same as open driveshaft setups and the later D35, but the pinion
shaft is totally different. The shaft is smaller in diameter than an
open driveshaft axle since it doesn't have to be drilled for a bolt to
hold a yoke on. I'm not sure if the pinion shaft bearings are the same
or not, but would think they are smaller. The torque tube axle can't
easily be converted to open either. It's possible, but would take a lot
of work. I'd replace with a "big three" axle first.

I have been told that splines changed on the axles over the years. The
side gears have to be matched to axle splines, of course.

In general I wouldn't try to change gears in a torque tube axle (or the
196/199 equipped Americans with the tapered thread rear yoke). Swap
axles, or if you must change gears try to find a good used set. The
later model axles (66-69 American, 67+ big cars) can still be serviced
with new parts.

Hi,
I enjoy the list and find the posts very informative.
I am adding AC to my AMX because I am an oldster and being cool is now more important than being fast.
I am short 1 piece. The dash controls to the left of the steering wheel.
If anyone has that piece, please get back to me.
Thanks,
Don

Due to a lot of different things including my back going our last friday
I cant finish the grill resto in time for the show this sunday. I could
rush it as my back is better but the quality of the finished job would
suffer. My back is getting better so I will be able to take the car to
the show, just without the finished grill installed. :-( After numerous
hours of masking I finally was able to paint the silver yesterday. Today
I cleaned up a small amount of over spray and started to paint the
individual grill ribs by hand with a brush today. This also will be a
long tedious job, 3-4 day's a few hours each day a most. I have an
appointment at my friend shop to clean and detail the car early tomorrow
morning. Late in the day and till saturday night it is going to rain. So
once the car is cleaned tomorrow it will be in the garage till sunday
morning for the show when the weather is supposed to be nice. In the
mean time I will still be plugging along on hand painting the ribs on
the grill so by the middle of next week it can be clear coated and
installed by the end of next week. The next project on this car should
be easy as I am just restoring the double black factory pin stripe on
both sides of the body. A little 3M Blue Fine Line masking tape and some
prep work and some One Shot sign painters paint an it will look factory
new again. Then to cutting the dark smoke tint letters by hand for the
windshield tint job. :-(

I was working on the 64 Classic but had some bad luck
in the last couple of days. The short story is that
someone has transplanted a 232 six into the car in
front of the T-96 tranny. The shift linkage was toast
so I replaced the steering column and shifter. Got
the car running and it at first ran well but I did not
try to drive it. A few days later, after sitting I
restarted it and it had no oil circulation to the head
and the dry valves clattered. I connected a
mechanical oil pressure gauge to the engine and it had
50 pounds of oil pressure with the oil cold, but still
no oil to the head. Then later it had good
circulation to the head again. Something is
periodically blocking circulation to the head. Yes, I
pulled the shaft rocker bolt and the suspect head bolt
and tried to clean out the passage. I also used engine
flush.

I thought I would try to move the car without letting
it run too long (dry valves) and there is a terrible
racket when I depress the clutch. So there are two
(possibly connected) problems which need further
investigation.

In short, I will pull the engine and tranny and check
everything out before proceeding further. However, I
have a 196 engine ready to go in the car and a good (I
think.) T-96 with O/D.

I need a flywheel for the 196. This engine had an auto
tranny behind it in a previous life so it has a
flexplate now. Does anyone have a 196 flywheel they
will part with?

This will hopefully be a project for this summer, as I
need to shift my attention to another car right now.

Maybe not so short after all, huh?
