Here is a good article describing a process which will remove the
anodizing which will allow you to polish it. You will have to apply a
clear coat after you are done polishing it. I would suggest trying this
on a sample piece first just so you can get a good feel for
it.http://www.secondchancegarage.com/public/665.cfm

" I noticed that my rear differential is leaking out the front of the
" diff. (65 American) Anyone know procdure to repair this (my TSM does
" not seem to address this unless I am reading wrong area..) and the part
" number(s) for seals, etc that I will need to fix... Any advice is
" appreciated...
"
"
" If this is a 196 car with the "big nut" driveshaft, good luck finding
" the seal! It's a stepped seal that is no longer made. Check the AMC
" dealers such as Blaser's, and Galvins. They might have one, or there may
" be repros since I located one about eight years ago (from Blaser, I
" think). They were difficult to find, and I was told only 3-4 were in
" inentory at that time.

if you really get stuck on this, you could swap the whole rear and
driveshaft for a non-big-nut american setup. all 232s plus '67-9 199s
had them. in addition [if you have a stick] '68-9 232s have a full
synchro t-14 that with driveshaft is a straight swap for the t-96.

" If you have a 232 car it's got a "normal" rear u-joint yoke that's
" bolted on, and the joint is bolted on also. That seal you can get at any
" local parts store. It will help to get the number off the seal so they
" can cross reference it. A Hornet/Concord or Gremlin/Spirit rear axle
" will fit if you decide to swap, but you'll have to get the driveshaft
" also. That axle is a little wide for pre 64 Americans, but will fit with
" stock wheels. A friend put one in a 1960 model. It would have been
" better with deeper wheels, but it did work.

i'm not so sure the hornet driveshaft is the right length for an
american. even if you have to have it shortened you'll still need it
though, as the u-joints are bigger [and more common] than the big nut
ones. this is rapidly getting more complicated, as while all
hornet/concord/gremlin/spirit axles are pretty much the same, your
'60s tranny needs an early-'70s t-14 yoke - and be warned, at some
point ['73? '74?] the t-14 output spline changed from the old coarse
warner to a fine torqueflite pitch.

you can even use the c-clip ones. you couldn't put your diff in a
c-clip axle since it has no place to put the clips, but going the
other way isn't a problem.

iirc the 'stang t-56 has a totally original bolt pattern; gm and

bellhousing. i've seen pics of an early amx with this setup. iirc
mike forte of forte's parts connection fortesparts.com was collecting
all the parts into a 'kit'...

a ford-pattern richmond would bolt to a late-'70s t150 3sp bell, and
you'd also use the t150 pilot, clutch disk, and to bearing. output on
all richmonds is a 32-spline th400 shaft iirc.

For those of you who commonly buy and sell stuff on ebay, many of you are
aware of the shilling, and ficticious auctions like those who put up AMXs
for sale, and the car only exists on ebay in the photo, as the
seller/scammers are phishing for people to bid on it before they defraud
them by paypal or electronic transfer of funds while the buyer thinks he/she
is getting deal of a lifetime. I have a whole big file dedicated to this on
my website. However, I didn't know there was this many scams, ya'll take a
moment to check out how some of these work to protect yourself:
http://scams.flipshark.com/ebayindex.html

This is a file off my site abuot ebay scams:
http://www.planethoustonamx.com/stuff/amc_ebay_scam.htm

Nigerian scams, lottos and various and how I have handled some and how to
shut some down too:
http://www.planethoustonamx.com/stuff/nigerian%20scams.htm

And since this is a ongoing problem with the old AMCs themselves on ebay, I
took this file out of another file and stuck it on my front page again, it
is about AMC "car" scams
http://www.planethoustonamx.com/Shut_Up_Files/ebay_old_car_scammers.htm

Guys:

Back in the fall a number of you were exceedingly
helpful when I pulled and then replaced the auto
transmission on my '62 Classic. Today I actually got
around to starting the car (a few things came up with
that car and some others, hence the delay!) and as of
right now I'm not a happy camper because the
transmission is whining.

Here's the scenario: I filled the transmission with
oil per the instructions (5 quarts before starting,
then start and add 4 more for a total of 9). Before
moving or starting the car I adjusted the auto shift
linkage by disconnecting it at the transmission,
pushing in "L" button, and then back under the car I
moved the lever all the way to the back position and
reconnected it. I then started the car and drove it
by backing up about 20 feet out of the garage. It
seems to shift right into reverse, then into D1 when I
pulle back in. It moved back and forth without any
real shuddering. But the transmission whines whether
the car is in gear or not.

Am I hearing a pump? What else should I check?

Please-oh-pretty-please don't tell me I have to pull
that transmission back out. That was a job I really
don't want to repeat!

Thanks for any and all help, guys!

- Justin
