Yep, Gordy Chilson. Go to his show every year. Pics are at
http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v105/Superglider/ His show used to be
late in September but last year was on Labor Day weekend.. Worth the
trip

i am NOT going with a ford 8.8. i been told the 8.8 disk brake kit will fit the amc 20 bolt pattern on the output flange of the axle tube. if not, i will be able to fabricate it to fit. you say the m15 will work, i will leave it in for now, get rid of the torque tube, and have me a m20 standing by for when the 15 goes.

i was thinking i might have to go with some bending on shifter again with a t-5. my steering shifter took a crap on me a few years ago, so i got a hurst truck 3 speed floor shift kit and put it in, mounted on the left side of the trans tunnel. had to take a torch to it and give it a few degrees bend back a little to clear the dash. the shift pattern is bass ackwards, but kinda cool that way. when in 3rd, it wouldnt go in if the seat had to be slid forward much more than where im comfortable. works well tho for now.

another issue i forgot to mension. seatbelts. the car never had any in it. is the floor pan strong enough in these cars to run bolt thru with about a 2-3" washer on the bottom side to keep from pulling thru to easy? doesnt bother me much ridin without them, but the wife, she is paranoid about it ya know? im content to go with just some lap belts with chrome latches.

" Snip
" Get the bell housing from any 79 or later six cylinder manual shift car.
" That
" has the bolt pattern for the T-5 and will bolt to the 304.
" Snip
" Actually from a 1977 or later 304 V8 or I-6 manual shift car that uses
" the SR-4 T-4 or T-5 transmission. NOT 4 CYLINDER VERSIONS!

likewise also 5sp and some 4sp jeeps [cjs mostly afaik] from the '80s.

" Make sure you are getting the throw out arm and bearing with the bell
" housing! 3 speed manual transmission bell housing will not work.

there are apparently multidrilled bells with both the t150 3sp and
sr4/t4/t5 4/5sp patterns, but most t150 bells wouldn't have the t5
holes drilled even if they have the meat in the right places.

btw you will want a t150-application pilot bushing and clutch disk,
and maybe output yoke too, as it has the same pilot and splines as the
mustang 5.0 t5.

" SNIP
" If you're using a 304 you can use the AMC 15 axle.
" Snip
" This is probably a safe assumption except;
" AMC used the Dana 20 with all V-8's.
" I believe the 304 develops more torque than any of the I-6's do and that
" is what you have to worry about.
" The Dana 15 uses a $100.00 brake drum while the Dana 20 uses a $25.00
" brake drum.
" You can find a nice 3.07:1 final drive in a Dana 15 which works well
" with a 5 speed.
" Whereas a Dana 20 the first choice is a 3.15:1 which is o.k., but second
" choice is somewhere in the high 2's.

nit: -amc- 20. dana 20 is a transfer case.

amc m20 ratios were 2.86, 3.15, 3.54... but jeeps had 3.07 and 3.31
m20 gears on the '3-carrier'. there were also 2.56 and 2.73 on the
'2-carrier'.

" im hoping to run a t-5. i have to measure distances first. i want to
" retain my bench seats, but the shifter on the mustang t-5 looks a little
" far back.

solution to two problems: get a junk chevy s-10 t5. the 'stang t5
retainer is too big for the amc bell's registration hole but the
chevy's isn't. also, the s-10 t5 has about the furthest-forward
shifter loc of any version, so swap extension cases.

while you have the tranny apart, i'd suggest a warner aftermarket 0.8
5th in place of the too-tall stock 0.68, and a 5speeds.com
countershaft stabilizer.

belts may have been optional, in which case you'd already have the
anchors. otherwise, i'd look to the underfloor reinforcements for the
seat tracks as strong places to attach to.

  amc's.http://www.classicone.com/wsc/catalog/amc/amc_per1.htm
what would i have to do to adapt this kit to my old trunion style on my 62 classic?

What would the correct colour "T" stripe be on a 1973 AMX with fresh plum colour.
I think it is white but would like to confirm.

Any pictures of a fresh plum AMX with white stripe and 1 with black stripe.
For comparison
Thanks

Below are the specs from the machine shop that built out my latest 390
engine. As mentioned before in an earlier note, this engine dyno'd with 459
max hp with a 439 average (456.4 and 437.5 with the alternative, smaller
carb) and 448 max ft lbs of torq with 418.2 average (451.5 and 416.3 again
with the alternative, smaller carb) which is quite an accomplishment for a
moderately worked 390 with stock compression and no nitrous, stock but
worked heads and a pretty standard carb based fuel delivery system. Reid's
Automotive, machine shop I used, builds a lot of racing engines and has a
calculator that determines what an engine should do in the quarter mile.
They determined that at a weight of 3250 pounds and with optimum gearing and
traction, I should be able to turn 10.87 in the quarter mile. Pretty
amazing!

It is being shipped this week and I hope to install it before the fourth of
July.

All of the work and parts below represent a total of about $6,500 in parts
(including a bunch of perfectly good used parts lost by #$^#$^ DHL worth
about $1500 to replace) and $3,500 in machine shop work PLUS a previously
but improperly rebuilt, balanced and blueprinted 390 (with the wrong, lower
compression 401 pistons in it).

I also purchased a set of ported and polished 291C heads for $700 off eBay
that were supposed to be ready to go from someone who had previously
purchased them for $1100 but never used them. When they arrived at Reid's
they determined that the heads had previously had one too many valves jobs
which resulted in the edge of the valves having a knife edge which prevented
them from being redone as they were no longer in very good shape. Ready to
go...yeah right! So now the heads have brandy new stainless steel 202 and
168 valves and will be good for as long as I will have any use for them.
Regretfully, I later found another set of 291C head that had been totally
redone with brand new valves, studs, guide plates, high tension double valve
springs, retainers and guides and although they were not ported and
polished, they were cc'd and probably would have only had nominally lower
volume flow than the other heads . I picked up that second set of heads for
$550 which would have been a heck of a lot cheaper that what I have in total
in the other heads that were supposed to ready to go!

Initially I purchased an original group 19 AMC logo'd R4B and Holley 950
three barrel setup but in the end the I ended up putting in enough
performance goodies in the engine that I realized that the R4B was not
sufficient enough for what the motor was capable of thus the Performer RPM
AirGap manifold. The Air Gap pulled strong right up to 6700 RPM on the
dyno. If anyone is interested in a fully bead blasted AMC logo'd R4B with a
custom PCV valve shroud, please let me know. It will be headed to eBay one
of these days.

The following are some of the specs from the two dyno pulls. One had my
trusty old 750 Holley on it that I have had since 1973. My brother and I
rebuilt it in the early 80s with a 750 kit and pulled all of the choke
mechanism out of it to give it maximum flow. That carb was rebuilt by Reid's
but this time has the anti backfire power valve saver now installed. As you
will see in the dyno results, it is essentially an 850 as it only had
slightly lower volume pulls than the 950 three barrel Holley that I also had
rebuilt by Reid's. Finally, the engine was dialed in on the dyno for
advance curve and the carb was jetted for proper fuel burn ratio so as to
not be dumping too much gas into the engine. With what I spent on this one,
I don't even want to think about trashing it by not having it set up
correctly.
