Kim,

First, had I been in your place that day, I might have made
it about midway through your chat with the guy before I took
one step back and swiftly introduced my boot to his jewels.

The good thing is, he is assured that Legendary's reputation
remains solid in that the owner hates AMCs and caters only
to the MMTB crowd. They truly are legends in their own minds.
Pompous jerks catering to pompous jerks. He said it all with
the lottery comment- 'when you are so rich that your brain shuts
off, come back and we'll be happy to screw you out of all the
money we can. Heck, it's our speciality! We do it everyday!'

As for your car, you are a 'restorer'. As such, you don't
need the 'over-restored' work they do, where they make the car
far more straight and smooth than it ever was when new. You
will easily find someone to properly RESTORE your car's finish
for the $3000-$5000 mentioned, and the $3000 is likely very
doable. Make the rounds, talk to show car owners, and try to
find the guy who's willing to take it as a side job on HIS
schedule...'when he can get to it between other work'. The
more flexible you are, the lower the price you can get. You'll
also save big by removing all the trim parts yourself. Less
for them to remove, work around and/or mask off....all labor.

A: In the Help! section of most auto parts stores there is a kit, but it may
be going away soon, so I would grab it while you can. NAPA recently dumped
about 1/2 of what we had and we no longer have catalogs for the leftovers.
(the young punks throw away the "old and useless" books because some of the
parts are no longer available, but they were the only way we could find what
was still on the spinning tree!)
Beck Arnley has gone away and will be replaced with Alltrom parts. We are
mid change at my store and while the new stuff is coming, it's not in the
computer or not in the warehouse yet, but the old stuff became special order
or obsolete.

Hi All,

I was replacing my carb the other day and I broke the carb where
the
heater tube attaches for the choke. The threaded mounting stud
of the
carb broke off inside the heater tube threads.

What can I do to get a heater tube mounted to my new carb?
Where does
one find the right choke heater tube?

Thanks!

Sly

Ken, to flush the PS take the return line off the steering box and drain the reservoir in a catch basin. Plug the hose. Connect another length of hose to the steering box and run it to the catch basin. Refill the reservoir and crank up the car. Let it idle and have someone turn the steering wheel a little side to side. Watch the reservoir and don't let it get low enough to suck air. A quart or two of fluid later and you should have good clean fluid dumping in the catch basin. Reconnect and top off.

I caught parts of some drag race on ESPN2 the other night when I could
not sleep. One Pro/Stock team had a R/W/B paint job reminiscent of Wally
Booth's Hornet. It reminded me of Penske painting his NASCAR no# 2 car
R/W/B for what ever anniversary a few years back.

The small cars started using them with the Concord and Spirit. As Joe Fulton mentioned, Pacer always used them. They are called "Isoclamps" -- they isolate the spring from vibrations.

Thanks much for the run-down of which editions were printed John! And for catching my mistake -- I somehow managed to subtract a year even after looking at my Copyright 1976 edition with 77 models (not 75 w/76!!).

I met and talked to John conde around 92-95. He mentioned that he'd put together some of the albums and was surprised by the demand. He mentioned that he'd liked to have done another before he retired, but there was no funding. I don't recall if that was due to the Renault take-over or not -- I seem to recall he retired when Renault came in, but I'm not sure of the year.

The "AMC Family Album" isn't as rare as you'd think Michael. It was rather
popular, popular enough that AMC updated it in 1975 (has 76 models too!) and printed it as "The American Motors Family Album"
(I have a copy of it). The intro mentions the "Rambler Family Album" and a "Nash
Family Album" (just as the 69 does), but not another AMC one. It does mention
that it's printed periodically though. I don't know of one between 69 and 75,
and none after. I've only seen a copy of the "Nash Family Album".
<<

Frank, I'm unaware of any "1975 (has 76 models)" publication, but do know that
the '76 album (includes '77 models) was a last leaf of its kind on the American
Motors Family tree. The "Family Album" concept, nine editions of which
appeared, had begun with Nash's preparation (in 1951) for its golden
anniversary: '52, '54, and '56 printings followed. Three "Rambler" albums ('61,
'62, '63) and two as "AMC" ('69 and '76) completed the run. In this "Antiques
Road Show" era of "How much is it worth?" (rather than "Is it meaningful?"), the
'69 editon may prove more "valuable" than the others --- not because of its
content or its scarcity, but because of its graphic design. It's, like, totally groovy! Read it
in the light of your vintage lava lamp.

PickNPull Moss Landing (north of Monterey, CA) has a
1976 Hornet Sportabout wagon. This one has the vinyl
roof (first one I have ever seen outside the
brochure). Has the faded ralley stripe decals. Wheels
are missing. 258/auto, wrecked in left front. Good
blue interior. All vinyl top trim intact.

There is a 49-early fifties Nash Airflyte four door
sedan in the stock lot. Looks to be in good shape and
not too rusty.

All American/European Auto Wreckers (Moss Landing) has
a 1983 Eagle D/L wagon. White/brown. 258/auto.
Pretty complete.

That was Dick Maskin's car,of Maskin and Kanners fame who also owns and
operates Dart Machinery ,one hell of an engine builder too, won the title a
few years back with Jim Yates then was with Jegs. Now he is campaining his
own car with Rickie Smith at the wheel. They painted the car R/W/B last year
and said the idea came from a picture of the his old Hornet X from the cover
of a 1974 National Dragster.

I know we have at least one AMC guy from Las Vegas on here! Could you get in touch with Bob Koehler, 3830 SW Enson Street, Apt. 613, zip 89119? He's got a few questions on the AMC V-8s. He sent me a letter in early March that I put aside, and since I'm being deployed tomorrow I don't have time to answer! I just ran across the letter while I was cleaning my desk just to make sure everything was done before I go. If someone in the area would look up a phone number and call I'd appreciate it! He's got a CJ-7 and a 78 Wagoneer along with some misc. parts he's trying to identify -- 76-79 engines (258, 304, 360, and 401) and parts. Might be a chance to pick up some spare parts for a fair price. He new to AMCs and needs some advice/info on flywheels/flexplates and things like that. No phone number given, and he doesn't have internet access.

Besides a trip to the junkyard today I tried to get to
the bottom of the 64 Classic oil pressure problem.

Yesterday I dropped the oil pan a few inches. I could
not drop it all the way in spite of the fact that it
looked like I had room before I loosened the bolts.
The crossmember was in the way. I knew I would have
to drop the crossmember on an American, but I thought
the Classic with the modified motor mounts would have
enough room. Did not want to hassle with the front
springs, so I did not drop the crossmember.

Anyway, I was able to see into the oil pan space and
feel around in there with a magnet. I found nothing
loose and no metal shavings in the pan. So I buttoned
it back up.

Today I worked on top of the engine. Pulled the head
bolt which runs into the oil passage for the rocker
shaft. I turned the engine over with no ignition
while that head bolt was out to hopefully allow oil
pressure to flush the passage. I felt around in the
head bolt "socket" and I think I found the oil passage
with a stiff wire. There was no obvious debris on the
wire when I pulled it out. The valve train overall
looks pretty clean, not all sludgy. I put the bolt
back and torqued all of the bolts. Then changed the
oil and filter and installed a mechanical oil pressure
gauge (from Napa). I started the car and had 55
pounds of oil pressure at fast idle with cold oil and
no lifter noise even from the start. The valve cover
was off so I could see that I had oil supply to all of
the rockers. I added one quart of engine flush to the
oil and let it idle until it got good at hot. Hot
idle oil pressure held at about 22 pounds which is
excellent in my mind.

So now I'll begin cleaning up the engine bay and
correcting other squawks on the car including:

Emergency brake cable is frozen (I have a spare).

Heater core is bypassed (probably leaking)

Steering wheel/horn assembly has been jury rigged.

Shifter linkage is connected now, but I still need the
correct clips. The shafts on the shift rods are not
drilled for cotter keys so I used hairpins but they
seem too tight. Would like to find the correct clips.

Regards,
Joe Fulton

Hi, Guys:

For the first time in like forever, I actually WON
something, and not on Ebay. Yesterday, I won a
stylin' 1962 VW Notchback, all for the cost of a $20
raffle ticket. You can see a smallish pic of the car
at www.centralcoastvwclub.com/id237.htm (you have to
scroll down) and - yes - my name in lights!

The car is located in San Mateo, CA, and I'm in SW
Michigan. My question is, car shipping. Has anyone
recently had a car shipped 2000 miles? I'm curious if
with gas prices higher whether shipping costs have
increased significantly. Also, if you have a
particular shipper you're happy with, let me know! I
know this has come up before, but frankly I've not
paid that much attention to the messages. Silly me.

If shipping costs are exhorbitant, I can fly out and
drive back. I need to talk more with the guy who ran
the charity raffle, but the only thing he mentioned
was a "grabby" clutch. I have driven a variety of
iffy cars the 1200 miles from Colorado to Michigan,
but of course this one is like twice as far away, and
I have no history with it, so I'm a little hesitant.

I just acquired a blue Gremlin kart body today from
a guy near Lakehurst, NJ. He owns 4 full-sized
Gremlins, but lost storage, and had to part with a few
parts cars, still has 4 Gremlins, though. A decent 74
X ( under cover, gold ), and an orange one.
Anyway, I could use some pictures of the mounting
tabs/brackets on the Gremlin go-kart chassis, as I got
a "virgin" body that has never been mounted before,
supposedly this body was in a museum of sorts. Has no
holes anywhere along the bottom I saw for mounting.
All the stickers are intact, and has a rear sticker
that says F.W. Associates, Mansfield, OH. I presume
that was the maker of the body? Or reseller? Anyway,
will have some pictures soon. Does have a few cracked
areas, the lower right rocker panel has broken off ( I
have the pieces from the guy), also a chunk behind the
right front wheel along the rocker. Otherwise, a few
small cracks, but nice shape, needs buffing, some
oxidation on top. Would like some "official"
measurements as to the dimensional mounting points, I
assume 4-point mounting. Would like that diagramed out
for me if possible, when someone with a Gremlin kart
gets some time.
Also, this guy claims that you could get a rear roof
spoiler for this cart, I'd never heard of that, anyone
know about that?
Well, that's all, tired from that 500 mile round-trip
to pick up the body. I got it squeezed, barely, into
my Jeep Cherokee. Good thing there was no chassis, or
it might have had to travel on top! Bad news, that. I
was still pinched some at the steering wheel, but I
made it home with it crammed in. :) No way was I
driving all that way for nothing! :)
