On my 69 this ground wire mounts to the firewall just above the master over towards the drivers fender slightly. When I installed the Wrangler EFI on mine I used the 10 qauge wire in it's harness to make a complete copper ground circuit from this point to the engine block and battery grounds giving the car a full copper ground circuit.
steel is good conductor , copper is better! Instead of the basic short ground cable on the trunk mounted battery, mine also runs a 2 qauge cable all the way to the engine block.
your mileage may vary!

232 does indeed use the same type setup, small round plate between crank and converter. starter ring teeth on converter. I've got round plates here, should have two or three laying around. Or just take the cracked one and have a shop make you one.
Do they interchange between the 196 and the 232 style engines??? I don't know. I think so. I know the converters are different though. Starter ring is smaller on the 196. 199-232 are the same.

The only thing I wish I could have kept out of my 01 Crewcrap S-10 was it's rear axle! 3:73 posi, Disc brakes with the internal emergancy brake setup!
It was a fairly common setup under the Crewcab 4X4. All that I looked at when I bought it new had the 3:73 in them, discs brakes standard, Posi optional, but most dealers ordered them with the posi. Search for a totalled 4X4 crewcab S-10. If your buying steel wheels look for a dual pattern wheel, or have it redrilled to 4 1/2" from the 4 3/4" GM pattern.
I wish I'd have measured the width of the axle before getting rid of the truck.
Second tank of gas almost gone on the Dakota, Still getting better mileage with the 4.7 5 speed than the 4.3 auto did in the S-10!

Make sure there's a good ground strap from the engine block to the body also. On most AMCs this is from an engine mount bolt to the crossmember, but can be on any engine/body bolt. Should be at least the same size as the battery ground cable, but can be an uninsulated woven strap. Some people have run the dash ground wire to the block to solve problems -- this is usually due to a bad or marginal engine/body ground. Even the older cars sometimes benefit from this due to corrosion in dash to body joints or more likely a marginal/bad engine/body ground cable/strap.

Could be that the squeaky bushings are slightly tighter than the older ones Doc. I've never had any squeaks from the poly sway bar bushings on my car, nor did I get any from the strut rod bushings when I ran them 50/50 (poly in front, rubber in back -- allows more flexibility but still better control in forward motion). I didn't use ANY lubricant when installing.

Mark, AFAIK the 196/199/232 used the same diameter ring gear up through 1971... 153 tooth? Anyway, that's the "small" bell housing. In 72 the 232 was bigger, went to the V-8 size bell though.

the jeeps are wider, close to the eagle's width iirc.

There is nothing loose or worn after taking anything apart and lubeing
every thing. I am just going to drive it and let everything just work
itself in.The car has barely been drive 1,000 miles in the last 1 1/2
years. It sat for 11 months in my friends shop last year for the
interior. Let it squeak I don't care any more. I am driving it now. I
just didn't want anything to break, fall off, puncture the gas tank and
destroy the car or break down and leave me stranded. Tomorrow it goes
for a hand wash job and a interior vacuumed. I am now going back to the
grill resto. I want it done by the end of the month. I got complimented
again as I was at the gas station on the cars looks and by my friend at
his body shop who has not seen the car for almost 2 years.

Makes me wonder when/if mine will start squeaking!
I haven't done the rear yet, just the front. I'm thinking of going back to rubber on the upper control arms as it is pretty rough riding, could be the V-8 springs and 205/60/15 tires too! Handles great for a 30+ year old car though! No sway bar needed!

There was something smaller! When my dad and I swapped the 71 258 and 69 trans iin my 65 440 hardtop he took a NOS converter off the dealerships shelf they had no use for and we put it together. When we tryed to start it the starter whirred and did not engage the flywheel! I was mad! My dad was like, oh well, I'll pull the trans and use another converter. Once it was out it was evident that the ring on the first converter was smaller than the 232 one we had taken out was. we used the converter that came from the 69 trans in the end as our stock 65 trans had 216,000 miles on it!
IIRC dad looked up the NOS converter and it was from an early 60's application with a 196, but that was over 25 years ago so don't quote me on it!

Well then, this might be the source of all the bad luck and
don't-get-a-break on your project car! -- you used up all your good
Car-ma getting those @#$!! f'mumble bushings to not squeak.

It's the only explanation, as it seems to be a design feature of that
blasted plastic.
