Seems very strange to me and I would be investigating all your grounds and leads.
It might just be a fluke that the orignal charged OK. I suspect maybe a ground problem that resolved when you gass the engine and it twisted on the mounts slightly? Try using a neg jumper cable, block to body ground to see if that helps. Or use neg jumper Block ground to body ground then use the pos to ground the block to the NEG battery post, Make sure you get the neg post! to Engine block. This should give you a quick check of the ground circuit to engine block.
How is you gauge wired? To alt or to battery? It may be picking up something fromt he Alt diodes and getting confused?
I know I swapped the 51 amp [IIRC] 73 alt onto my 69 when the stock 69 35 amp died. It was only a one terminal changeover to do and it worked like a champ. I'd give it to you but since it is a known good one I will probably just use it on the 65 when I get it running.

Joe,

You have a bad ground to the voltage regulator or alternator body.

What is happening is the ground is "floating". You need a continuous ground in order
to measure and regulate power...

I would swap out the regulator and check to be sure it is grounded...

OK. About three years ago i replaced the locked up
35amp Motorola alternator on my 67 Ambassador with a
rebuilt(loose use of the term rebuilt ) CarQuest unit.
The alt was locked up when i got the Ambo. The rebuilt
alt worked fine for about a month or so. THEN it quit
charging completely......i went thru THREE MORE of
the pieces of crap Car Quest alternators,..EACH ONE
did something weirdly different...WRONG!!!!!!!~!
Finally i gave up and installed a WELL-USED totally
original 1967 Rambler American 6 cylinder 35 amp
alternator. Charged fine at higher than idle
speeed...but the aftermarket gauge showed a slight
dis-charge at idle.Sooo after a year of driving it
that way.....i bought a factory replacement AMC
Motorola upgrade 51 amp unit from Jeff
Kennedy....installed it tonight. WEIRDNESS GETS
WAYYYYY WORSE!!!!!!! At idle speed the needle jumps
around some...unless i turn on the lights..then it's
KINDA smooth..but higher charge rate than normal.
BUT.... if i rev it up even SLIGHTLY ...the needle
jumps WILDLY back and forth from 14-16 volts????????
WTF is the deal now?????? OHHH YEAH..i've already
tried SEVERAL NOS and Aftermarket regulators...ALL are
the same result!!!!!! WTFFFFF?? I've heard along time
ago that the positive feed on the fuse block can cause
this..BUT..it charged well with the OLD Rambler
alt..except at idle???????? Just ABout ready to fry
the (*&^%$#@ thing!! HELPPPPP Joe

My first thought was the regulator, but you replaced it. The most common
problem is one or more of the isolation diodes going bad. There are six
in some models. Check out the following links for checking/repair info.
The last link has the original wiring diagram as well as info on
replacing with a Delco SI alternator with internal regulator. You don't
need a "one wire" alternator -- it's easy to make ANY Delco internally
regulated alternator a "one wire" if desired.

The important thing is to make sure the pulley lines up with the others
or it will throw or quickly wear out the belt. You'll have to modify the
bracket (or the alternator body) because the portion of the alternator
that goes in the bracket is wider on the Delco than the Moto -- usually
twice the width. If you want to retain close to stock appearance, cut
the external regulator wires and tape them to the alternator wiring.
Don't connect them to anything, just wrap the two harnesses together
with electrical tape. The alternator body is different, but since it's
usually mounted low on the engine most people won't notice. You can just
leave the old wiring alone -- the alternator just charges the battery,
nothing but the idiot light should be connected to it.

The Jeep (CJ3B) link is very useful for anyone considering the
alternator swap, and also has links to an engine conversion manual that
will help when considering engine swaps.

The last link, amccf, has a break down of the Moto alternator and a
wiring diagram for a 70 Gremlin (page 1 of 3) that has the standard AMC
wiring for the Moto alternator. Hope all this helps!

I'm looking for a 68-70 AMX pro streeter. Turn key or possibly a rolling chassis as I have some engine parts of my own I'd like to work into such a car. I used to see an occaisional car on ebay every year or so but I must not be looking hard enough these days. Have not located one in a while. If anyone knows of anything, please email me.

re: crazy alternator:

assuming the parts are good, it's wiring; likely ground problems as Mark
and others pointed out.

Electrical connections need as much care and feeding as the rest of the
engine. Loose screws, frayed wires, non-shiny connectors, loose
fast-ons, etc, any one could do it.

Some of those Moto regulators ground themselves by the case to the
fender; unbolt it, sand the metal bare and shiny on the fender and reg
case, make sure it's flat, use the right screw and make it tight. If
it's not TIGHT TIGHT it will fail, or worse, be erratic, which seems to
be what you have.

If your battery cables are not in LIKE NEW condition, replace them. Wire
brush the posts, apply grease, tighten. The grease keeps out air and
water, and the pressure from the properly tightened bolt will squeeze it
out between the metal-to-metal portion and make a good connection.

The engine block needs to be extremely well grounded to the chasis. Buy
a new cable if necessary. That ground strap carries the entire
electrical load of averything in the car except what's bolted to the
block (eg. not starter, alternator, ignition and some others).

Some AMCs have a weird ground wire from the dash that seems to come back
into the engine compartment and bolts to the firewall. Never owned one
of those, couldn't tell you where it is!

THe alternator body is grounded through the bracket bolts; it seems
unlikely that it's not grounded, even if loose.

One bad diode in the alternator will generally just make it not charge
well, such as at idle; depending on the diode, it could cause battery
drain when the car is off. HOwever, at reasonable RPMs it should charge
reasonably.

Short of a voltmeter and analysis, my favorite alternator/generator test
is this:

* Engine running, low/normal idle, headlights on. Note brightness.

* rev engine to 2000 - 3000; headlights should get brighter.

If above doesn't happen, charging system isn't working.

The reason the test is always valid is, due to chemistry and physics a
charged 12V lead/acid battery droops to 12 - 13 volts; a working
charging system brings the battery up to 14.4 to 14.7 volts; you can
easily see the increase in brightness due to raised voltage (brightness
increases by the square of the power increase).

I been driving the orange Hornet 5 days a week since I got it out of my
friends shop just before Christmas except in the snow. I been tweaking
on it here and there. The Alt. clearance problem is now solved and I
have done a lot of cosmetic work on the car. When I had the new rear
springs installed I used the same poly bushing's as I used on my yellow
car 3-4 years previous. In below freezing temps they have a tendency to
squeak a little. The orange car has developed a squeak over the last 2
months and now that it is warm it should have gone away. The shop that
installed the springs apparently did not lube the parts properly. Now
that they are properly lubed and don't squeak there is a slight clunking
noise that I didn't hear over the squeaking noise. It's either a shock
bushing or a bad shock. They only have 3,000 miles on them. Does
everything with this car have to be a fight?

My Easter vacation wasn't. The "Manon" was made much more than another matinee because of the 75th anniversary hoopla (much of that, of course, thanks to automobiles [the Texaco-Metropolitan Opera Radio Network had shown Texans with oil and money could also buy culture and class], the Mets-Yankees meet was made much more than another baseball game because of dreams afield in early season, the "Polyphonic" press conference was made much more than another work day because I've designed many houses, helped design several buildings, and imagined a zillion dream cars, but have never designed (or dreamt of designing) any web sites, and the car show was much more than yet another stop on the tour 'cause Reine Renee and the Princesses were along for the ride. Those two teen-aged ladies aren't "princesses" at all --- nice, grounded daughters (and mom leaves any her "crown" in the dressing room.) Having lived in semi-rural farm areas and loving to ride horses, they know a thing or !
 two about trucks.

It was interesting to see which vehicles they found "bogus" and "lame" --- not always the ones I'd expected; it was also interesting to see how few car fans were fans of music. One older woman who said her son-in-law owned several "foreign car" [who hears that term anymore?] dealerships on Long Island referenced the Rolex ad, two gay guys wondered if they could pose for cell phone photos, and several "furrin" industry executives in attendance asked for an autograph, but otherwise, it was just the typical car New York show.

While that means that it's never as good as the typical Detroit car show (let alone a Geneva car show), it was, as usual, a chance to talk with some of the knowledgeable car people one sees only at car shows --- indoors in the winter and outdoors in the summer or fall. Not all the California car people came to the Javits, but all the Detroit car people, most of the European car people, and many of the Asian car people showed up at the 2006 show.

I see the Jeep Patriot looking more "real" than the Compass or the Caliber (more AMC looking as well), I see the Sky over the Solstice, I see Nissan's still stylin' over the heads of Honda, Toyota, and Motown (although I see a new G35 suffers from "can't leave it alone" syndrome), I can't see how people can see out of the new Scion sports coupe (I can't see out of the first one and it doesn't have a blind quarter that makes an AMX's sail seem see-through), I can't see what's new about MB's new E, I still can't see what's seen in Mopar's Magnum, Charger, and 300C (a memory from "more for less" AMC maybe?), and I can't see why somebody sees AMC in SEMA. Is it 2006 or 1966?

http://tinyurl.com/lccab

But finally, I -can- see how the future of American car styling may be in the minds, eyes, and hands of those -Americans- who still do aspire to achieve.

Who really wanted to read, to think, to see, to speak, or to be better.

You don't have 5 minutes to read? You won't have 18 to look and learn.

While away, this list thankfully defaulted to digest (so my IT peeps didn't repeat their "Chicken Little" act from when a European architect's PowerPoint e-mail overstuffed the "in" box), 700+ subscribers checked into TomJ's new list motel, several voices from old were heard anew (some to teach, some merely to scream, "Now cut it out!"), Scion lighted that new Fuse, Nissan lighted new taillights, "Doc" Hudson Hornet lit up a new silver screen, and "Doc" AMC Hornet re-lit an old digital fire with grit on a being-restored grill.

Me I am a person that cannot leave anything alone. I am always looking
for ways to improve everything not only my cars. My latest 74 Hornet
Hatchback project is my latest custom effort. It came with Western
Turbine style wheels and I detailed them with the same orange paint the
car is painted with between the ribs. For the knock off's I made from
scratch a copy of the AMC emblem on the panel below the hatch. I added
BFG T/A Radials. The car will get a complete set of 77AMX flairs and
rear window louver painted to match the car. The interior has all custom
modified and custom machined billet knobs on the dash and on the stock
window roller handles and on the stock column gear shift lever done by
me. The door panels are button and tufted black vinal done by me and
also I did all the panels in the hatch area the same. I also made a
diamond tufted panel for inside the hatch. I also added a door popper
for the hatch to save my fingers. The bench seat was replaced with 2
Javelin buckets that were similar to the stock Hornet buckets. The dash
has an Auto Meter tac in place of the stock clock. Since the emblem on
the glove box was missing I made my own using rub on model letters and
plastic and an AMC decal from my model parts. The car has no radio and
has a stock radio delete panel with a metal early Hornet front fender
emblem attached to the center of it using double stick tape. Under the
stock package tray is a factory gauge pod of unknown year with 3 Auto
Meter gauges mounted in a custom panel and a battery cut off switch. The
seats are upholstered with the stock 74 Hornet insert material with the
rest of them done in black vinal. The side windows are tinted the very
lightest smoke they make and it subtly sets off the orange paint. The
windshield will be tinted 6 inches down from the top with the light tint
and with a darker smoke tint lettering spelling out American Motors. I
still have to repaint the stock double black pin stripe on both sides of
the car as idiots polishing the car in the past have worn it off in
spots. Now this is a custom even you purest's would probably like. It's
98% stock AMC parts from different years. The engine has an Acell Super
Coil with a stock points dist. The stock carb has a manual choke and
when the tranny gets rebuilt it will have a B&M Trans Pack set on firm
and an aux. tranny cooler. I also replaced that horrible 35 amp Motorola
alt. with a 100 amp Delco and added a front sway bar. I replaced the
rear springs with ESPO HD ones with new poly bushing's and shackles. The
car got the usual mechanical's repaired, brakes, front end, water pump,
fuel pump, dist. tune up, hosed belts, wires and a new heater core and
fluid changes along with a new gas tank, sender all rubber fuel and
brake lines, the A/C recharged and a new radiator and much more. A lot
of work and money for a 500$ car in just 2 1/2 years. Good thing it ws a
99% rust free Florida car with almost mint original paint.

(you'll need to read a little to learn more (pp. 59 to 64 of the pdf)

(if someone grills you on price, say $110k; almost 3X top estimates...)

and if anyone remembers when the "American Imperialist" Ambassadors

(click the photo above "DSC04675")

were respected and solid rather than rocked and stoned,

they remember when knowledge was considered something aspirational.

Maybe they don't care how they make themselves look today.

But now Americans can learn from history,

(or not learn and repeat their mistakes)

whether it's the 1940s or the 1920s,

if AMC isn't one that "looks great but doesn't make any noise"

if AMC doesn't want to look noisy and miss its silent history

on 1980s AMX Turbos, AMC may need a gag, a nose job, a coup,

(it has coupes) or a major facelift to look smarter.

AMC needs to copy some other last independents.

A grille is the face almost all cars show off,

http://www.packardmuseum.org/

(some even look good "grille-less")

http://www.theavanti.com/Brewer.jpg

but AMC shows off egg on face and grille.

Looking dumb is neither cool nor defiant.

Will AMC be a land of losers?

Will AMC be a lost cause?

You're what AMC is today.

Your grille is its face.

So until American motors lose -all- their American car-smarts,

reading should be fundamental and looking smart should be fun.

Don't hide your smarts behind dum old AMC grills. That's sic.

"Dumb" AMC is dead for two decades.

Tomorrow's AMC should be smarter.

Tomorrow's AMC starts today.

AMC is what you make it.

So just "improve" it.

Just do it. Now.
