Don't fret about the "outbid by a buck!" -- the winning bidder might
have had $100 more behind that, unseen to you.

Assume you bid $100 for it, and you're the highest bidder. The other
persone comes by and bids $999. eBay will only bid $101, enough to be
the highest bidder.

If at 90 seconds to go, you bid say, $120, eBay would proxy-bid for the
other buyer $121, because they have a hidden (to you) limit of $999.
Unless you bid $1000 or more, you'll never get it.

YOu can never tell how much money the other bider had in reserve.

A way to realistically guess the actual price is to search for your item
normally, then find the SHOW COMPLETED ITEMS button, click, search
again. It will show you items that are already sold -- and what they
sold for. If you've been bidding $100, and they typically go for $200,
well there you go; bid $250 and you'll get it (probably :-)

One nice trick is to search for MISSPELLED NAMES! If you want a
carburetor, search for carburator, carburrator, etc, or better yet, use
wild-cards -- search for carb*
