Dan Strohl had a 79 AMX (the "HMX"!) that was the feature of that article and restoration. After getting into the car, he found that it was just too far gone with rust to be a worthy candidate. 
He has since obtained an 82 Spirit GT with far fewer issues. His intention is still to install an EFI 4.0 and he intends to install many of the AMX's unique items. 
I correspond with him on a regular basis, so I get updates periodically  :-)
