I bet the guy got a look at a Twin Stick OD car and thought the second short stick was 4WD. I've seen that happen!! A fellow mentioned it when he saw one at a car show the first time and knew that AMC had a connection with Jeep. I overheard him tell his buddy (this wasn't an AMC show, but a Classic convertible w/TS at a cruise in) that he didn't know AMC made 4x4 cars back then, and comment that this one was pretty low for a 4WD!! I explained the TS to him then... 

The Baja cars weren't put on 4x4 chassis. They were modified unit bodies. Not by the factory, but by James Garner's racing team (or a shop contracted by them).
