Re: 70 amx brake warning switch

To elaborate a bit, what it does is CUT fluid flow to the failed side, that's why it's relatively close to the master cylinder. As long as the failure is downstream of that switch, when pressure drops on one side the plunger is forced to that side by the pressure on the "good" side. That keeps you from losing all you fluid out the "bad" side and retains brakes on the "good" side. All AMCs are plumbed front to rear. Some later 80s cars have left front and right rear connected to one side, right front and left rear to the other. The theory is that retains 50% braking capacity, not ~70-30 or so with front/rear split (~70/30 with weight transfer to the front).

So if your front brakes fail, the car will be able to stop with the rear brakes or visa versa. The horizontal piston is supposed to move, this is what defers the pressure. When cleaning this valve you should always remove the switch (plastic cap, top center) to avoid cutting the actuating pin in half. If your brake light on the dash of your car is on all the time, this switch is probably the culprit.

On the passenger side firewall is a brass block, 4 brake lines go in and it has a switch and two plugs at opposite ends shaped like a H . I believe it's to let you know if you lose front or rear brakes. I removed it (we're changing all the lines and hoses) and took out the plugs on the sides to clean it out. There is a pin (horizontal) that I believe should move. If it doesn't move is this thing wasted?
