I've turned moderation on. What this means is one of the assistant moderators or myself will have to "allow" all new memberships. This was done for two reasons: 1) there was an obvious "phishing" of the list -- someone joined with the intent of using the mail list to distribute SPAM. That member was banned, but I located a couple others addresses that looked like they may have joined in an effort to do the same thing. Those have been banned also. 2) I found that someone decided to sign the list up for a slew of dead-end accountw. Things like service@xxxxxxxxxx, help@xxxxxxxxx, and such. Because of the way the List is set up these addresses don't harm the list. Mail is usually bounced from them and the list suspends all accounts that bounce mail after 3-4 delivery attempts. So they really don't take up much band width. The main problem is 80% of such addresses were signed up in December. Someone obviously has nothing better to do than attempt to bog the list down. I don't know who or care. It could even be an unrelated group of people -- kids on Christmas break, maybe -- with nothing better to do. Some people are like that! In any case, I've banned all such addresses found, and turned moderation on to prevent nuisance sign-ons in the future, phishing or just trying to bog the list down with bogus traffic. If you are having problems getting on the list, or I banned your address because I thought it looked bogus, please e-mail me directly and I'll take care of the problem. -- Frank Swygert (farna@xxxxxxx) Publisher, "American Independent Magazine" (AIM) For all AMC enthusiasts http://farna.home.att.net/AIM.html (free download available!)
