The published numbers speak for themselves: 1974 AMC 360: 2V -- 175 hp @ 4000 rpm; 285 lb/ft @2400 rpm 4V -- 195 hp @ 4400 rpm; 295 lb/ft @2900 rpm (single exhaust) 4V -- 220 hp @ 4400 rpm; 315 lb/ft @3100 rpm (dual exhaust) 1991 AMC/Jeep 4.0L MPFI -- 195 @ 4750 rpm; 225 lb/ft @4000 rpm Now all this is for BONE STOCK engines. The 4.0L is shy of the torque of a 360/4V single exhaust by a good bit, but it would be geared a little lower also. HP wise they are in fact the same. Because of gearing, weight, and transmission (both automatics) you won't notice much difference between a two wheel drive Cherokee 4.0L and a Matador sedan with a 360. In fact, the Cherokee would probably trounce it, assuming both are stock. You'd think the bigger engine would make up the weight difference easily, but the older transmissions are way less efficient than an AW-4, one reason why the AW-4 needs such low gearing for an auto. There is a big gain quick when you deviate from stock though. The 4.0L is running very near it's top efficiency. The carbed, smogged 360, on the other hand, has LOTS of room for improvement! Power can be doubled (~400 hp) with the 360 with a performance rebuild and around $5K (the works!), but you'll be hard pressed to get 300 hp from the 4.0L, even going the works and stroking to 4.6L. That's considering keeping both engines easily streetable on pump gas, and keeping the same $5K budget for building.
