T-35 tranny question

My 66 American/232 has a T-35 tranny, I guess and it has a rather harsh
downshift from 3-1 when coming to a stop. It is harsh enough to cause a
clunking noise (not the driveshaft as that has all been replaced, bushings
and all). I see in the TSM that the tranny has a modulator valve and
according to a friend who USED TO work on ATs, the modulator can cause this
symptom. The TSM isn't very specific, but it looks like the modulator is
INTERNAL (unlike my old Ford 390 of years ago). If so, I guess that's a job
for a transmission shop. I had to replace the Ford's modulator several
times due to leaks in the diaphragm and blowing smoke all over the place. I
finally got one that held up.
