I'm not sure if the MSD is that easy. It doesn't use the condenser. It wires between the distributor and coil IIRC. I mean the coil wire. There is also some more wiring that has to be done, but I forget exactly what. Seems to me there are at least four wires going from the box -- one ground, one hot, one to distro, one to coil? The Pertronix is that simple -- just drop it in place of the points. It screws down just like the points. The only mod is a switched hot wire running to the module. It installes just like changing points. Keep a screwdriver and book of matches in the glovebox with the points is all. I'm sure you know the old trick I'm suggesting! Matches might come in handy for some emergency too, you never know! With the Pertronix as easy as changin points and a wire, I don't know why you're so against it Doc! The MSD costs as much or more and is much more visible. Unless you just want to show the MSD box off (since people associate MSD with performance), the Pertronix is a better bargain. I've used both -- they perform about the same. -- Frank Swygert Publisher, "American Independent Magazine" (AIM) For all AMC enthusiasts http://farna.home.att.net/AIM.html (free download available!) -------------- Original message ---------------------- From: AMC74Hornet@xxxxxxxxx (Mr. AMC) Date: Thu, 24 Nov 2005 11:55:04 -0500 To: mail@xxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: Vacuum Wipers/Drum Brake Fun--Now MSD 6 Box Message-ID: <21776-4385F068-90@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx> I might consider a MSD 6 Box. What wiring is involved? and can it just be unplugged if the box fails to make the existing points operational? Also is the condenser still used with the MSD box? With a stock dist and and points with the Acell Super Coil and a manual choke on a stock Carter 1 bbl with a free flow air cleaner the car starts the first time in about 3-4 seconds every time in winter at temps around zero without that heater box with warm air to the carb off the exhaust manifold. In summer it fires immediately. You can tell I am an old timer as I never learned the Metric tire sizes. I have the equivalent of E-60-14's on the back and a slightly narrower and shorter tire on the front for sway bar/tire clearance. The speedo is pretty accurate and I get between 17-20 mpg around town. I do very little highway driving so I never checked the mileage. If the MSD box would give an improvement I would know no matter how small as I am one of the old timers that feels everything that most kids don't in there cars, especially since I have driven my yellow car for almost 32 years and the orange one is the same car. I know ever squeak, rattle and noise in this particular year car. "Doc"
