" Unless you're into high powered graphics or games,
" a high powered computer isn't necessary. A decent Pentium III 500 MHz or
" an AMD Athlon around the same speed, 512MB memory (256MB at least), and
" a 30-40GB hard drive would be fine.
you can get along with a lot less than that! though computers of that
class are easy enough to come by.
" The downside is WebTV isn't targeted by hackers, virii, or
" ad-ware -- as far as I know -- like computers are. This is why you DO
" NOT want to use Internet Explorer -- it's the most exploited software
" (excluding Windows itself) in the world!. Use Netscape or Firefox. I use
" Netscape at home and it ignores 90% of attacks. My daughter uses
" Firefox, and I thought about switching (Netscape is a bit slow to load,
" but fine after loaded), but Firefox has become popular enough that there
" are a couple virii/ad-ware programs (I'm not sure which, or if both)
" that specifically target it. I'm not aware of any that target
" Netscape... yet. There are one or two other browsers out there, but rank
" less in popularity. Popularity is MS Internet Explorer (comes bundled
" with Windows, duh!!), Mozilla Firefox, Netscape, then others. All seem
" to do the job, but there are a few web sites that will only
" display/operate certain features with IE. Those are (thankfully!) few
" and far between though.
nb. firefox is pulled off the netscape/mozilla codebase - essentially
a browser-only mozilla.
opera [www.opera.com, current ver 8.50] is another good browser.
the only thing to use explorer for is windows update.
