Well, a properly set up computer is just about as simple as Web-TV -- provided someone sets it up right. For mostly Internet access a computer would need the proper protection (firewall and anti-virus, and an ad-ware scanner), setup for the dial up, DSL, or cable connection, and auto-load a browser. Unless you're into high powered graphics or games, a high powered computer isn't necessary. A decent Pentium III 500 MHz or an AMD Athlon around the same speed, 512MB memory (256MB at least), and a 30-40GB hard drive would be fine. the only advantage you'd have is being able to do other things, like use a digital camera, photo editing/viewing, word processing, and spreadsheet. Being able to view PDF files is almost a must when using Internet resources, and I don't think WebTV has that capability (I could be wrong -- many browers have plug-ins for viewing PDFs driectly, and since WebTV is mainly a small computer with an integrated browser, it may have that capability as well). For! ease of use WebTV (or the MS equivalent) is difficult to beat. Computers are more versatile, and can be set up to be reasonably friendly. The downside is WebTV isn't targeted by hackers, virii, or ad-ware -- as far as I know -- like computers are. This is why you DO NOT want to use Internet Explorer -- it's the most exploited software (excluding Windows itself) in the world!. Use Netscape or Firefox. I use Netscape at home and it ignores 90% of attacks. My daughter uses Firefox, and I thought about switching (Netscape is a bit slow to load, but fine after loaded), but Firefox has become popular enough that there are a couple virii/ad-ware programs (I'm not sure which, or if both) that specifically target it. I'm not aware of any that target Netscape... yet. There are one or two other browsers out there, but rank less in popularity. Popularity is MS Internet Explorer (comes bundled with Windows, duh!!), Mozilla Firefox, Netscape, then others. All seem to do the job, but there are a few web sites that will only display/operate certain fea! tures with IE. Those are (thankfully!) few and far between though.
