As I recall you need the output shaft as well as the tailshaft housing. The Jeep output shaft has different splines for the xfer case and doesn't have a place to mount a speedo gear. So the trans has to come apart to change the shaft. That isn't to much trouble -- you don't have to take clutch packs apart, but will need a gasket set. If it were me, I'd put new bands and clutches in since it's apart. Just keep things clean and try to take it apart then put back together in the same weekend -- so you don't forget what went where!

Okay, I know you know most of this, having worked at a Jeep dealer, but some members don't!

Subject: Turbo 400 question

I'm sending this to both lists.
I have one of the nailhead Jeep transmission cases slated for us in my 65
Ambassador. What do I need to get to convert this trans to two wheel drive
configuration? The exact trans I have now is a 68 trans bolted to a 37,000 mile
Vigilante V-8 and Dana 20 case. Yes I have it all and it is still bolted
together sitting on my garage floor. I ask now because I stumbled on a NOS turbo
400 tailshaft housing, but don't know if I'm better off to buy a parts trans or
just the housing and get the matching shaft later or even if I need an output
shaft for this. The housing is 5 1/4" long or some such length inbetween 5 and 6
inches I don't recall the exact length. Any help is appreciated.
Thanks,-
