Rhett Butler <amc.inline.six@xxxxxxxxx>, you said...
Wasn't the 990-H just the pillarless hardtop model that came on for
1964 and ran through 1967? Those are the only 990-Hs I know of.
Yes and no: the 1964 990-H was a hardtop (model number 6487-9), yes,
but it also featured the 4-barrel carburetor (versus the 2-barrel
within all the other 990 level vehicles of that model year). There was
a 990 (no "H") 2 door hardtop available in 1964. It was model number
6487-5.
Also worth noting that there was no 880 in the 1964 model year.
The Rambler American 440-H didn't debut until 1963 because that's when
the hardtop model did. Of course, from 1964-on, the American had a 440
and a 440-H hardtop. But I think the H was market by a 2-bbl carb or
something.
in '64, that was marketed by the "power-pak" 2-barrel carburetor, yup
-- and yes, again, there were 440 (model number 6409-5) and 440-H
(model number 6409-7) 2-door hardtops, with the aforementioned
distinction.
And the Classic 770-H didn't make it until 1964, too.
Actually, while there was a 770 2-door hardtop in 1964, it was not a
770-H. Simply a 770 (model number 6419-5). Perhaps others could
correct, but I believe the 770-H did not exist until 1965.
Cheers,
Gwen Smith
