Marketing. You don't want to be the only one without a six when everyone else has one. It may only "look good on paper", but it looks good. Back in the 50s those without V-8s suffered for the same reason. I do agree though, the AMC 2.5 is a better engine than the early 2.8L V-6. The last year AMC used them in Jeeps they were at least improved, but the EFI models are the only ones worth a second look. If I had a cherokee with a V-6 (86 only!) I'd look into adding the EFI from a later Camaro to it. At least it would be worth having then!
