You're right Joe, it's an "L" for the 232. 199 is "A", just like the 195.6 (also an "A", but looks very different). For a complete list of engine codes and locations go to: http://www.amcrc.com/tech/tech.html You can use the number to determine if the engine is original or not. The 232 was optional in 64 for the Classic, it was only standard equipment in the Typhoon (and maybe 770 models). The standard engine for most models was still the 195.6. It's possible that someone replaced a 196 with a 199. If it's a 199 that's the answer. You can't tell the difference between a 199/232/258 by just looking at them though. There are clues, like the 199 didn't come with a 2V carb from the factory, and only 258s used a plastic valve cover, but there are to many possibilities to attempt just looking in most cases. A 232/258 2V manifold fits a 199 just fine, and a lot of people have swapped that plastic thing for a metal valve cover.
