Jim, it's a good idea. When I was a kid, the servo up the road had a go-kart
powered by a car battery
and starter motor. The owners son used to drive it around the fuel hungry
cars and bowsers. Had great fun.
For about 20 minutes. There's your first problem. Back on the charger for 6
hours.
In your case, you want to travel 60 miles each day. A 40 hp electric motor
might do the job.
It won't need a gearbox, if it's the right type. Translated to metric,
that's 30KW, not allowing for
losses. Lets suppose you can get one rated at 120V. That will draw 250 Amps.
If your trip takes
1 hour and 20 minutes, (return) you will require 325 Amp/Hour batteries.
The 40 HP motor will weigh a bit more than your gear box/transmission.
10 12v 325 AH batteries will weigh a lot more than your motor. In volume,
your new battery will
be about 80 times the one your using now. And they have to be deep cycle.
The cost of conversion buys a lot of gas. Spend some of that money on making
the mid 60s American
more fuel efficient, and start a car pool if possible. You never know, you
may convert them to AMC.
Geoff, also tired of high fuel prices.
