Another problem -- paint fades unevenly. Different batches of paint, and different exposure levels. The older the less chance of a match. Clean and prep the car and have someone like Maaco paint it for $400 or so. Will look better for a while anyway. All depends on how much prep work YOU do -- or pay them above the cost of the paint job to do. I've done the initial sanding and body work, and had them do the harder parts and/or finish off what I started and got good results -- nice paint that lasted about seven years. Of course I removed all trim/mirrors/etc. that I could easily get off too -- even bumpers, grille, and lights! The easier it is for them the better the job will be for the most part. That and they see that you CARE about the car, it's not "just another cheap paint job". Most of the painters enjoy seeing something unusual like a decently kept AMC and will take a little more care for that reason -- not just another late model.
