Starter for 401 question....

Daniel,
The problem does probably not begin with your starter. Your engine probably makes a lot of cranking pressure and your ignition system has to be timed with this in mind. As an example, old Harley Davidsons had an ignition retard control to keep the kick starter from kicking the rider off of the bike when the cylinder fired too soon and reversed the rotation of the crankshaft.
My S/Pro Amx will also kick back and actually break the Bendix collar in the starter into two (or three) pieces if I use a conventional ignition system and a normal ignition curve!!!!!
Welcome to the world of high horse power !!!!!!! It is now up to you to design an ignition curve into whatever ignition system you are using to allow the engine to be rotated with the starter (without kicking back) and then go to proper advance when running.
I do not know which system you are attempting to run, but ANY system can be made to work. You are probably at a stage where you are ready for electronics. Consider the MSD Digital 6. You can program it ALL just the way your engine likes it, ........and it will start every time.
Your AMC friend,
