Thanks Matt for the great thoughtful and informative reply. Something I
didn't mention is that for those cars I run no thermostat, and electric fans
and pure anti freeze, I also have 7 blade flex fans. One thing you mention
was a clogged cat. Someone on this amc-list helped me with that problem in
the late 1990s on the old black Pacer custom woodie wagon I had, as is
huffed and puffed and always seemed to run hot. Simple 258, AT, fan shroud,
even used a thermostat(!) and 50/50 mix anti freeze/spring water. It was not
until I mentioned that the exhausts pipe directly below the exhausts
manifold was glowing orange that someone mentioned it was a clogged catylic
converter. Took it around the corner a few days later and got a good
Vietnamese cat converter put on by my rude Iranian buddies at Abadan (which
also would inspect a go kart for a box of Church's or Popeye's chicken
w/fixins) and the car ran like never before, it even smoothed out the 'chug
chug' effect it had for years. So thanks for that whoever it was here.
For some reason I have always thought that most 60's AMCs however used
140-160 degree thermostats, chances are wrong, but again, have not bougth
one, nor used one for a long time. Not sure where I got that, possibly from
whatever the parts people used to sell me or look up and I would blindly pay
for.
Speaking of overheating, I had a Ambassador 68 that ran and drove great at
low speeds. But at 60-70 it would blow coolant all over engine and usually
die after everything was soaked. Problem was the radiator looked new, even
inside, but after pulling it out weighed something like 50+ pounds, was so
clogged even my radiator man suggested chunking it. Got a used radiator at
pick a part for $24, reversed the mounts and installed it, Ambo ran great at
all speeds and no overfolw problems ever again.
Yup, cooling systems sometimes tend to be ignored. For another thread
another day, could talk about batteries during summer months and how many I
have lost when they dry out!
