Re: Matador 4.0

Neat Idea! With gas going out of sight, it's neat to see someone thinking outside the box. With the right gearing and setup of fuel system, it should be like a stock mid-70's smog 360, maybe even a little snappier. Especially if it's stroked. Very cool!

Your doing something wrong or the things is just plain worn out if your 5 spd Cherokee eats fuel! I ran the crap out of my 5 speed 96 here in the mountains of WV and through town traffic. I never saw less then 17mpg and had highs of 25mpg on the highway. The only exception was towing and the least I saw towing was 15mpg and that was with my 65 Ambassador convertible on a tow dolly, backwards with the top down and the windshiled acting as an air brake! Towed it 5 hours home that way!!!!
I'd put the 4.0L in the Matador and if I wanted more power I'd stroke it!
We had a 73 Matador 4 door sedan at the dealer I worked at in south western pa.
258 auto and I made more then one trip to Columbus, Ohio and back in it for Nissan training.
It ran fine. wasn't a race car, but it was quite respectable in performance.
I refuse to think a Matador coupe with an injected 4.0L would run worse or have enough less torque to cause any problem. If I didn't now own three 327 motors and a 287 I would be putting a stroker in the 65 Convertible!!!!
