A: I forgot to mention that the trans bolts up fine, but starter/flywheel/flexplates are somewhat year/vehicle matched. (EFI requires the matching flexplate with notches or harmonic balancer CPS kit with a Eagle trans) Jeep used 2 styles of EFI. 87 to 08/90 (EGR on the intake) is Renix and the intake fits the Eagle with minor changes, but the EFI harness and computer are under the dash. '91 up are HO and the whole harness you need is under the hood (except the trans controller if the parts rig is automatic, AFAIK) but the brake booster gets in the way. Same trouble with putting one into an FSJ, so I'm going with GM Hydroboost to clear the intake (and increase brake power). I happen to have a 999 from a '99 Wrangler (just the case alone and the internals are in a pile, but appear to be the same as 998 except the valve body is electronic) and I think it has the CPS sensor still. I would use a std trans harness with the Eagle (using the Eagle trans and flexplate) and probably get the aftermarket passthru VSS with the correct gear for the tire size/axle gear ratio. (the EFI will work better if you do) There was something else, but I'm not quite awake yet. " From: ramblerfreak <ramblerfreak@xxxxxxxxx> " " " Howdy! i had a quick question i searched the archives as much as i could " but i didn't find exactly what i was lookin for, i have a 1986 Eagle " with a annoying engine ticking noise and worn rings that are allowing " major blow by (this thing emits smoke in vast quantities at around 65 " mph) Anyway i was looking in the junkyards and no one has any 4.2's " that are worth anything but ive been coming across plenty of 4.0's will " the 4.0 block bolt up to the 998 tranny? and will i have to modify " anything like the int/exh manifolds to use the 2bbl carb set up? or " should i try to get the EFI stuff to go along with the 4.0? and if i try " to use the EFI will it work with a non computer controlled tranny? yes; it's been done. surprisingly the 4.0 block does have the eagle diff mounting lugs even though they were never used. cherokee autos up to '95 or so had independent controllers; wranglers up to some date had non-electronic trannies. an engine from those years won't mind the 998. it'll bolt up to the 998 but you'll have to relocate the cps if you go with efi, or you could get the 999/32rh from a wrangler. it's a variant of the 998. imho your easiest swap would be a wrangler 4.0 + tranny; up to '00/01 or so they were all 3sp like the 998, and the wrangler has a centered fan like the grand chero but unlike the cherokee. and i'd go with efi - you'll love it. the only hitch is intake/booster clearance; a smaller booster is a good idea. and if you get the whole pkg it doesn't matter if the tranny is electronic [32re]; the ecm handles it. belated thought: cherokees weigh pretty similarly to eagles but are usually geared lower - nothing taller than 3.07. ________________________________________________________________________ Andrew Hay the genius nature internet rambler is to see what all have seen adh@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx and think what none thought
