Re: Best 4.0 combo

Both Wrangler and Grand Cherokee 4.0L have centered cooling fans.
Why anyone would want to use one, I don't know, Maybe in a towing rig. Not in anything else that I can think of.
I run electric fans. Just make sure you get good ones. Take offs from OEM cars seem to be the best bet. Aftermarket fans seem to be either really expensive or just plain lacking in cooling capabilities.
My American has an S blade fan that was pulled from some unkown late 80's early 90's GM product. I haven't even gotten around wiring up an automatic fan sensor yet. I use a switch and relay. I wanted the switch as backup so I went ahead and installed it figuring I'll add the automatic sender later. I've driven it 300-400 miles this summer on 90+ degree days and I think I've only needed to turn the fan on one time! Even in stop and go traffic it stay about half way up the stock temp gauge. I guess that's a sign my radiator is good!
Have I mentioned how happy I am with my 4.0L?

>Jim, I failed to mention a Wrangler engine! I forgot about the fan ebing offset in the XJ, don't recall if it is or not in the GC. Changing the water pump, fan, pulley, and belt is easy enough, though I'd use an electric fan (as I do). While your in the junkyard look for a Ford Taurus with a two speed electric fan. I found mine in a 94, but later 96+ "jelly bean" types may use it also -- easy to spot, they use a three wire connector. The fan integrated fan shroud is about the right size, but will need to be modified (20% or so cut away, two new holes drilled for through radiator mounts).

It's a big enough fan (~16") to amply cool the 4.0L and draws enough air, and the shroud is pretty big. Shroud will need less modifying to fit an AMC, so if you see one in a junkyard nab the fan quick! Not sure if other Volvos would work, but thake a look at 850 (2.4L five cylinder) fans, they may be nearly the same as the 960. Don't let the small size of the engines fool you -- they turn higher rpm than the 4.0L and therefore create just as much (maybe more) heat. Ratings on the 2.9L six are 201 hp @ 6000, 2.4L five 190 hp @ 5100 rpm or 168 hp @ 6200 rpm (depending on model). My 4.6L cruises at ~2400 rpm @ 75 mph, the 2.9L ~3200 rpm @ 75 mph. Heat output should be near the same.
