The alternator problem is normal, at least the faint glow at idle/low rpm. When it comes on solid and the gauges go is not common. I'd pull the instrument cluster and replace the instrument panel voltage regulator. That controls voltage to the gauges, limits it to ~5V. You can still get the regulators from NAPA, but I don't have a part number and most clerks will have trouble finding it (that's what most people report). I think it was posted here on the list within the last 2-3 weeks, so search for "regulator". you can replace with a solid state 5V regulator from RS if you don't mind a bit of soldering (just a couple wires -- http://www.wps.com/AMC/dashreg/index.html). I believe the original regulator, which is a "vibrating points", or bi-metal type, is sticking and shorting out the charging system and causing the gauges to drop and light to come on. Replacing it should solve the problem. A slightly higher wattage bulb will cure the faint glow, IIRC. The air vent arm isn't attached to anything. It just has that spring so that when pressure builds in the bowl it will vent. The instrument voltage regulaotr may solve your surging problem also -- it could be caused by a voltage drop in the ignition circuit. I'm not well versed in Holley carbs, but the power valve could be blown. I'm sure someone here has a good deal of experience with older model Holleys! The 4150 is basically the same double pumper used on many race cars, at least the older 60s and 70s cars. On August 14, 2005 Bargain Bob Petersen wrote: > Have a couple of questions. First on my 65 Marlin the alterntor light is either on faint or flashing or it comes on solid and sends the gas gauge and temp gauge to zero, after a while it goes out and the gauges return to normal. This has been going on for many years and the charging system is fine. > > Second, I though I might have some bad gas but I put in fresh and some heat and the problem is still there, the car pulsates or jerks as you are going along, very noticeable at slow speeds, I looked at the carb( holley 4150 4bbl on 327) and noticed the arm for the air relief valve isnt attached to the valve or the carb . You can move it all around. Isnt this supposed to be attached to the carb?
