Carb and alternator questions

Have a couple of questions. First on my 65 Marlin the alterntor light is either on faint or flashing or it comes on solid and sends the gas gauge and temp gauge to zero, after a while it goes out and the gauges return to normal. This has been going on for many years and the charging system is fine.

Second, I though I might have some bad gas but I put in fresh and some heat and the problem is still there, the car pulsates or jerks as you are going along, very noticeable at slow speeds, I looked at the carb( holley 4150 4bbl on 327) and noticed the arm for the air relief valve isnt attached to the valve or the carb . You can move it all around. Isnt this supposed to be attached to the carb? Could this cause the problem?

As always, any and all help is appreciated.
