Re: Dumb Brakes

I have to chime onto this drum versus disc brake
thing. The subject has been dealt with before but
since they were labeled dangerous I need to edjumacate
you. The feds required discs to be standard on all
cars on the front.

A mandate by the feds is NOT a good argument of what is best.

Drums are not dangerous if kept
adjusted and in good repair.

Same for discs.

<> Drum brakes & the compounds used for linings,
when wet or when grease would bleed out , or a spring
would let go, or a cylinder leaked, were putting people into the
other lane,
into trees, into guard rails and into holes in the ground.

Two thoughts-
1) You say "used", "would", & "were" implying past-tense also implying that this is old systems using old technology.

2) Other than a spring breaking (which I have never seen happen), discs using the same pad material would suffer from water or grease contamination and a leaky cylinder so, I don't see an argument.

For the mass majority, who are not tinkerers, with Kevlar
linings, drilled backing plates etc.......... there
are many more alive than would otherwise be if drum
brakes were still being pumped out of Detroit.

That is conjecture, not fact.

I could just as easily say that 'more people would be alive if Detroit HAD put out more drums' and be just as provable.

Drum brakes are crap, shit, dangerous, lethal and stupid.

That is an opinion, not a fact.

In our neighborhood in Mass. , we lost a friends Mother
to those pieces of crap > on a new Oldsmobile > sent
her into oncoming traffic when the left front locked up.

I would venture to say that there was more contributing to that accident than is being told. IF (BIG IF) it was SOLELY the brake's fault, it sounds like a case of a faulty brake more than bad design.

So, as to badmouthing drum brakes, yes, you'll catch
it from me 24/7/365 and them some.

As I will to those crappy-a$$ed discs.

Now granted I kept the discs on my AMX as I drive that
harder, but I am not hesitant to take my drum laden
"death mobile" anywhere my "safety car" will go.

I drive my disc-infected Ford everyday and enjoy the soothing shimmy it makes when I come to a stop. :)
