YOu're right -- I'm guilty also of a "shortcut" answer.


The real problem is *indequate* brakes, coupled with poor
maintenance.

9" drums on a mid-weight car are simply not enough, for example.

And I've seen lots of huge SUVs with modern disk brakes that are
just as inadequate -- I hear some cars have 30K mile life on
rotors! Clearly that indicates too-small a brake -- though severe
"maintenance" would keep it safe(r).


The manu's cut corners where they think they can get away with


it. Some are merely worse than others.
