Contact the guy and ask what model it came off of first. Then remember that a few things were done differently in Canada. It's possible that one cable was used in all AMCs assembled in Canada whereas three or so different lengths were used in the US. The main reason for this is that parts had to be shipped and stored, easier to store one and have a bit of extra cable snake under the hood than to ship, store, and sort three. I know for sure this was done with some parts. Another reason is that there were local content laws in the 60s-80s, all the way up to NAFTA, I believe, and that didn't alleviate all of them! The cable could be Canada specific. Most Canadians would have no way of knowing what parts were used only on Canadian cars unless they've run across an issue like this before. I can't recall specifics, but have run across a couple items that were different between Canadian and US assembled cars.
